Glicerio Without Number
In an attempt to break taboos, this short documentary sheds light over the cliché that the street population lives nonchalantly.
Filmed at the neighborhood of Glicério, São Paulo, (the most concentrated street population per capita of Brazil) the short movie shows how they are trying to get off the streets and analyzes the ways society views it.
The name "Glicerio Without Number" comes from a constant complaint from the street population that employers have prejudice towards someone that doesn't have a permanent address.
Music:
Antonín Dvorak - "String Quartet No:12 in F Major Op. 96 American; Lento"
Stendec - "Office to Studio" from Album "The Noise and the City"
Shostakovich - "Chamber Symphony Op.110a" perfomed by "University of Utah Philharmonia"
"Caricatures - The Schoenberg Sex Machine"
::Screened in Gasteig Open Video (Munich, Germany)
::Screened at Moment Factory (Montreal, Canada)
::Screened at Festival do Filme Livre (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
::Screened in Fabbrica Europa Festival 2009 (Firenze, Italy)

You see I live in Colombia, and I'm pretty sure that you, being from Brazil, are pretty aware that these kind of documentaries and these topics in general (poverty, drugs, gangs etc) are way to common, everybody does it over and over againand tell it in the same way, and it happens across all southamerica.
If you want to adress these topics, well o.k, do so, but I think you would be obligated to do it in a more original way.
Again, sorry if I'm offending you, it's not my intention, but thise is a critique from a person who suffers quite a bit because of the video and film production of his countrie.
With this work you've proven you got the talent, know amaze us with the idea and the way you tell it.
You didn't offend me in anyway, in fact, the opinion of my friends are quite the same. I'm also tired of documentarists that only talk about poverty, it appears that here in Brazil only poverty sells to the outside, while the rest is confined within the country.
My biggest question though is how? You say in a more original way, but how? I mean, should we turn poverty in poetry? In the Brazil of 60-80's that was a solution, the films that talked about violence saw the bandit as the hero. Recently it has gone the other way.
This doc began with my curiosity on seeing everyday this situation and not knowing how they lived. So, me and two friends spent a week (I wished we had more time) sleeping, eating and living with them. From what we captured I have the plain conscience that the ending product doesn't give a good panoramic about the situation, doesn't explain everything and is fail in many aspects. There isn't even a solution, because the whole situation is so complex.
Anyway, the proposal of the movie is to generate questions– about the media, about the individuals that were filmed, about what is the purpose of talking about this.
The ending affirmation, when it is said that you don't help anyone (he was talking to me at that time) I believe is the main point of this short. It is actually a question to be answered by those who watch the movie. Seeing that you already answered it I think that the movie filled in it purpose.
Regards!
But I believe you already ansewered yourself when you say: "The ending affirmation, when it is said that you don't help anyone, I believe is the main point of this short." I think thats the concept you should develope on your work, instead of just showing the situation in a third èrson kind of way.
Take a side, make a social statement, a criticisim, show us that envbolvemente the three of you had during that week... and this concpet you talk about I think would be a very good one to work on... HOW?... no idea, but I guess thats for you to figur out hehe...
My best regards to you man, from a fellow southamerican like yourself.
Let's see if there is anyway to make a feature doc out of it (There's 15hours of interviews and images to work with).
Cheers!
Bravo Matheus pour ton documentaire, il est très fort.

Great video.
Thanks for the compliment!
I think hache definitely raises some valid points. There are street communities all around the world, and they are generally all treated and looked upon in the same way. It is indeed a very complex and tricky situation that leaves the general public feeling completely helpless in the matter.
As of right now this film only shows the problem, but fails to raise the questions that it should be asking. What are we doing to help? What can we do? What have you and your friend accomplished by spending a week living and eating with these people?
I would definitely like to see the footage of you and your friend interacting with these people. You have made the effort to set an example, so why not show it? It will give the general public a way in to the situation, so it doesn't feel so separate from our own reality. That is in fact the main problem after all.
Solid video work and production nonetheless. Cant wait to see more.
