Impressive visual image. The colors, the depth of field, the resolution, the edition... wow. You really have talent to capture the spirit of mountain biking.

Please, could you share with us your workflow? Is all the footage shot at 1080/60i with the Canon A1 + sgpro?
  • Andy Yoong plus 3 years ago
All footage is on the xh-a1. Most of it using the sgpro. Sometimes it gets quite dark in the forest so I take the adaptor off to let more light into the camera.

I use PAL format so I started off shooting 25f on the Canon. Now I am shooting mostly with 50i so I have the option to process the shots for slow motion.

The 50i footage is dropped into a 25p timeline in Final Cut Pro and exported as progressive.

I think i'd like to have a Sony EX1 to save a lot of hassle with the slow motions as it can shoot 60fps but the Canon is still an amazing camera.

Thanks. Just one more question. Shot 50i and edit in a 25p timeline? Ummh, De-interlacing 50i to 25p in Final Cut reduces vertical resolution to half, doesn't it? It make sense to shot 50i because there's a lot of action and movement so 25p may flicker.

What kind of equipment use to do that slow travellings?
  • Andy Yoong plus 3 years ago
I'm not sure on the resolution drop. Maybe you could fill me in on that. The Canon shoots 25f and not 25p, i'm not sure what the real difference is. I shoot at 50i to be able to process this to 50p in after effects (slow motion), I can't figure out a workflow to get slow motions from the 25f footage. If you know a better way of de-interlacing the 50i let me know.

I use a dolly for the slow travelling shots. It's basically some skateboard wheels attached to a metal and wooden frame that runs on pvc pipes. I think there are some videos on here showing them in action.

Andy, that's excellent. I'm very impressed (not easily done!) Really looking forward to seeing the finished film. So obviously produced by people who love what they are doing.

We're both in Belfast - fancy a coffee sometime?

I'll echo most of the other comments... really enjoyed this, particularly the I/V sections; a good narrative adds so much more personality to the film. Thanks and I look forward to the full release. (riding Glentress this sat, can't wait now!).
