I'm a still photographer playing in a video world, thanks for the info, I actually have been reading the info on your site trying to master this whole compression game. It's like playing chess at times.

Amazing. I can barely draw a rectangle.

Same here, which is why I picked up a camera as a kid. My aunt tried to get me to paint, that didn't work so well so she gave me a camera instead.

So do I, I like being a photographer, but being able to draw is something I wish I was talented enough to do.

    Great intro, beautiful light!
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
I wish the HV30 had more control over exposure, I'm a still photographer and love using lights for portraits and it's been interesting trying to get the HV30 to do what I want exposure wise. Thank you for the comments!!

By the way is there somewhere one could watch your pictures?
Beeing a "photographer" myself (fond of light at least), I would be interested seeing them :)
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
    I have a photoblog at somewheretomaybe.com
  • Nicolas Bryant 3 years ago
:) very glad to have seen that.
My first feeling is I'm browsing threw pictures from National Geographic on let's say "Americans"
It is of course very documentary style but with lots of style and briliant technique.
So now I'll just have to wait what will come out next videowise :)
    All the best

Wow, this is really inspiring. I love how you did the first shot. And the cartoonist really got some drawing skills.
    Thanks!
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
Thanks Lobo, I was a bit worried that it was going to work when I was cutting it, but I thinked it worked okay, I needed to throw in the some of his other cartoons to break it up looking back on it now.

Really great short. I also have an HV30, so it's interesting to see what others are doing with it. If you wanted an alternative for doing a similar type of time lapse, you should check out pclix.com. I got one for my Nikon D80, and after a few attempts, I'm finally getting some great results. I import all of the photos, use a custom Photoshop action to downsample the image and resize the canvas for HD resolutions, and then Quicktime Pro to assemble the images together into a movie at whatever FPS you want.
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
Thanks for the link Patrick, thats a cool little device. I've one time lapse's in the past using pocket wizards and the same method of quicktime. I thought that video for this would make it more smoother, but I think you only notice it when the watercolors are running down towards the end. Could have saved my self a lot of trouble if I just used stills and the same method you describe. Thanks for the comments!!

the lighting in the beginning is incredible. The quality of the audio is a little suspect, did you use the in camera mic?
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
Appreciate the comments Adam, the audio is a little off because its down in our photo studio which the acoustics are less than stellar

  • Ray Ortega 3 years ago
    Hey Justin,
Loving the lighting in the beginning shots (black and white with just the subject in light and all dark). I have a shoot coming up where I might want to use this technique. Since you achieved the look so well can you tell me how you lit that part of the interview? What's your setup? And how do I go about matching that look? Thanks!
    -Ray
  • Justin Fowler plus 3 years ago
    Hi Ray,

Thanks for the comments, the lighting is really simply actually. It's just a hot light off to subject's left with a black background behind him and to his left (for the second camera angle) It's just an HV30 shooting in aperture priority at about -2 in exposure. If you have any other questions let me know.
