Riding at night can be a daunting and dangerous task; many biking commuters are faced with the issue of being obscured when riding on the streets. Visibility at night is a vital component of biker safety, hence the need for reflectors and attachable lights. However, some of these devices are not always effective especially from the side.

We created a system that requires very little rider input and maintenance, while increasing the visual footprint of bikers from all directions especially from the side. We accomplished this by expanding the surface area of light emitted through the use of RGB LEDs inside the rims of the wheels that change from red when slowing down to white when at cruising speed.

It should be noted that Project Aura is a lighting system which allows a rider to be seen, but does not replace a forward facing headlight to illuminate the roadway. By law (in Pennsylvania, the laws vary state by state) a front headlamp and rear reflector are required, use of a rear blinky is up to the rider‘s discretion.

very cool. have you seen light lane (lightlanebike.com)? this may be a small thing but it could be useful to make sure your bike is set up 100% street legal for your promo videos. meaning required reflectors (front, back, pedal and side facing on the wheels) and front/rear lights in the proper colors, white and red respectively. if you get hit (or hit someone) at night and you don't have your bike kitted out legally you may not get a ticket but the insurance company can use that to reduce your compensation. also, you may get a better glow in your videos if you use tires with reflective sidewalls. anyhow very cool idea and good luck!
  • Project AURA 9 months ago
Thanks Justin! Yes we have seen the light lane and no doubt it is quite an interesting solution. For later iterations, we will definitely be making sure it is street legal.

Please start a Kickstart project. Just curious, does this affect the truing on the wheels? I assume the added weight would throw off how the wheel rotates?
  • Project AURA 9 months ago
We aren't sure either as we have not tested the prototype fully. We tried to evenly distribute the weight as much as we could, but it is something to consider, no doubt.

  • Alex Tauras 9 months ago
Would you consider putting the plans in the public domain, and sharing on a site like Instructables? Would love to build one of these for my bike.

  • Karl 9 months ago
Looks cool. Although the vid with people riding around with no front or rear lights kinda makes a mockery of the whole safety aspect and makes it look more like a toy for hipsters to look cool? Look forward to seeing how this progresses. My personal thoughts it that this sort of lighting system might make you stand out a bit too much and attract negative attention from certain motorists on the road?
  • Project AURA 9 months ago
Yes, we acknowledge that we did not have front and rear lights because we wanted to showcase Project Aura by itself. Please see our blog listed above for a more indepth response to such critiques.
  • Karl 9 months ago
I guessed that, but having even a small LED blinky on solid front+rear would have negated that issue while still not detracting information from the Aura. Anyway, keep up the good work. Hopefully see these on the road in the near future. :)

  • gustav svensson 6 months ago
Nice! Looking forward to see more of this, I have already spotted something similar on the streets of Malmö, Sweden.

To be fair though, to really reduce bike accidents at night we would probably need to put alco-locks on all vehicles, including bikes.
  •
  • Winnie Slep 6 months ago
Very nice, I like the way it slows to red itself, no need for some clever brake notification system. I think though it would be wise to still advise that reflective upper-ware be worn as the rider's still pretty much invisible in your video.

  • Anthony Parrington 6 months ago
I was wondering whether your team could create a version of the design mounted into a 50mm carbon fibre rim?, or even an Aerospoke five spoke rim? Whilst the technology is pretty cool at this early stage, I wonder whether you might improve the design by lacing up your custom hub in a similar manner to the way that Powertap SRM hubs are mounted. This way the depth of the wheel section could protect your electrics from the rain, and potentially you might be able to lace the rim with less spokes [with the export assistance of a wheel builder], and mount the LED's in the spare holes. You can purchase some cheap carbon rims on ebay for under $400...
