Located in central Europe, Germany boasts Europe’s largest economy and is its most populous nation. After being devastated by two World Wars and then divided into two separated powers, (East and West Germany), Germany was reunited in 1990 and has grown into a modern economic and political power. Germans have a high cost of living, rising unemployment, but benefit from generous welfare programs.
Few countries have had as much impact on the world as Germany. It is the country of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, Albert Einstein, Beethoven and Bach, Goethe and Schiller, Karl Marx and Adolf Hitler and others who, in some way, have greatly impacted the history of humankind.
Approximately 80% of Germans, divided almost evenly between Protestants and Catholics, consider themselves Christians, but church numbers are steadily declining due to the growing number of people who are increasingly detached from the faith of their fathers. As in the days of Martin Luther, Germany is in great need of revival.
An encouraging sign, according to Operation World, is the growing enthusiasm for spiritual matters among German’s youth as well as the growth of evangelical churches.
Let’s pray that the truth of the gospel would shine brightly across this wonderful nation as Christ calls people out of darkness into His marvelous light.
