This Crossfit inspired piece is an experiment in sound, small moments, dynamic build and human intensity.

It's a race against the clock that we all must face, and a reminder to breathe, because you can.

Main piano track is Fugitif 1 by Swod: bit.ly/jGkUvc

Directed & Shot: Paul Schneider
Edit: Andrew Maggio (framecycle.com)
Sound Design: Paul Schneider & Andrew Maggio
twitter: @lettershome

I'd like to thank Windy City Crossfit & it's athletes for their talent, dedication and the fantastic facility.

Some wonderful detail work in this Paul, really nicely shot, but the win is in the edit. Great stuff mate!

The sound design and music mix was great, what did you use?
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
Thanks Nathan. Mashed up a lot of natural sounds for this, although the underlying piano is Fugitif 1 by Swod. I posted a link. Good stuff.

The edit was by my good friend and longtime collaborator Andrew Maggio and myself. We try to find and cut to unique tracks. More fun that way.

Beautiful. Sound was really good too, but I have to ask about the glass. What lenses did you use on this piece? ; )
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
It was shot really quickly. I mainly just used my Canon 24-70L. Believe I used the Canon 85 1.8 on the portraits.

Very nice. I finally got used to my primes, after the transition from the video camera. Maybe I should try some of the zooms. Video looked great. Thanks for the info! ;)
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
If you have time I think primes are the way to go. Tho the 24-70 is quite sharp. I like to get a ton of shots and very quickly, so I often use zooms. Even when working on commercials I'll typically have a couple really sharp Angenieux's on set...they'll save your hide.

    Super clever.

The rhythmic style of exercise plays nicely off the rhythm of both the contdown timer and the music.

Great edit. And the title is perfect :)

many people don't realize the power of sound. It is at least if not more than 50% of the presentation. Great shots too, and tidy edit help, but the sound is really stellar. well done!

awesome... my friends and I crossfit so I can't wait to share this... only I wish they subjects could look a little more sweaty or worn out (they sort of look like they were told to stand there and breathe hard)
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
To be honest I do too...but they were real Crossfitters...and they were really, really in shape. They worked out like crazy before every take and yet they barely broke a sweat. Elite fitness indeed.

Makes sense... I shared it and my friends said your video is amazing. Great job capturing our love of crossfit!

  • wow, great video man...very nice work! I just checked out your site, you do some great work. Do you ever shoot over on the east coast?
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
    Thank you!

Yes I do. I am reasonably nomadic and shoot on both coasts regularly. ;-) Spend a ton of time in NYC, especially in the summer months.
  •
  • cool man, we would love to collaborate some day...if you got a minute, check out some of our work. We pretty much do the same thing and shoot all over the country...so its good to link up with folks that do the same...especially people as talented as yourself...so thanks for the reply and keep in touch.

Pure cinema at its best... always encouraging to see pieces that can just "be," that escape from the tyranny of verbal narrative and aren't constrained by traditional plot... Love the textures and subtleties in the visuals and the mix. Well done!
  • Paul Schneider plus 9 months ago
Thanks Ryan. Personally I think verbal narrative doesn't always have to be so "tyrannical" ;-) but that said, yes...this was an experiment in other areas. Even in more visual pieces I feel its important to try and provide a bit of a thread or arc. That's why the clock was used. It's tension, a classic race against time. Are these folks trying to race against each other, against themselves, something in their lives or even life itself? It's kindof up to the viewer to make up their minds on that...but I think those types of things allow people to fill in the blanks creating personal narratives that help them to relate and enjoy it more. Otherwise, it'd probably be just a workout montage.

Again. thanks for the comments. Appreciate it.
  • Ryan Stevenson plus 9 months ago
I agree, I probably overstated with tyrannical, I guess I just mean I've seen pieces where that's the case and it's nice that this isn't. Obviously the progression and the tension in your film are the result of a good narrative sense, it's just good to see those things created subtly and visually. I like that point about personal narratives/audience investment too. Keep it up!
