Untitled, 8mm
My freshman year of college I took an 8mm film class as a requirement for my Recording Arts major. Our first assignment was to shoot around and get used to the camera. We messed around with the light meter, focus, zooming, handling the film, splicing, etc. The next assignment was to build a story around the footage we had already had and shoot extra scenes to edit together with those pieces. The result is what you see here. My original footage was the hawk flying, the stop motion rocks moving, and the sunset. My high school friends Ryan and Cheryl helped me out with the acting. We shot on a freezing windy winter day in Los Angeles.
After I showed this movie to my class we had a huge pissing contest about violence against women and the social responsibilities of a filmmaker. Looking back on it I remember how reactionary and argumentative college kids are (myself included). Also how young men tried to be feminists in order to get the attention of their female classmates. Impressionable minds indeed.
Notes: Shot on Super 8, projected in a room with music playing out of two stereos, video taped in that room, transferred from video to DVD, imported from DVD to editing software, compressed for Vimeo. Music is Flying Saucer Attack and Northern Picture Library.
