4. Hunted - Gordon Pinkerton - Ringling Thesis 2011
9 months ago
This is my senior film from Ringling College of Art and Design. It all starts when a naive native tribesman wanders into a hunter's campsite...

Everything, from initial story to final compositing, was created by me. Thanks for viewing and I hope you enjoy it!

  • Awesome short dude!! Great style, lighting and animation is simply brilliant!! May I ask how much time it took you for the rendering (per frame) and what renderer u used?
  • Gordon Pinkerton 9 months ago
Thanks! We use Pixar's Renderman at Ringling. It's a pretty powerful renderer, but not too much documentation out there on how to use it. I split everything into render layers (each character, background, foreground, etc.) so it's a little hard to give an actual render time... but I would say a mid shot with both characters took an average of about 8-10 minutes or so at HD720.
  • That sounds fair (8-10mins). Also splitting into layers sounds like a good idea but for some reason I haven't tried it yet. Thanks so much for answering. I wish u the best. : )
  • Oh oh.. could I plz have one more question? Did you use fur for the grass or simple textures with transparency? I tried once to make grass (twitpic.com/1e2d8u/full) but it took some time with the rendering.
  • Gordon Pinkerton 9 months ago
Yup, I used Maya fur. I was careful to only make it as dense as I needed it... so in most shots where you're seeing it from the side more... it's pretty light, but then on some of the top-down shots, you start to see patches so I would have to up the density. And yeah, it will add render time... but being conservative with light linking and shadow map sizes on the grass can save you a good amount of time. Most of the time I would render my grass out alone and composite it in too... But I think its worth the extra effort/time.
  • Good Thinking!! Thanks you so much.

Extremely impressive for having done it all yourself! I have similar aspirations, glad to see an example from someone who's been able to do it. :)
  • Gordon Pinkerton 9 months ago
It's a great experience doing an entire film on your own, I hope you have as much fun as I did! :D
  • Thea 9 months ago
Can I ask how many hours you estimate that you ended up putting into it from start to finish minus passive stuff like rendering? Doing such a project all on your own is daunting, but it's exactly what I want to try to do. The only other examples I've seen though have quoted four years or more. :(
  • Gordon Pinkerton 9 months ago
Yyyyup. It takes a while. This took a year and a half... and that was an intense... 12 hour days, 7 days a week kind of deal. But I don't regret a second of it :)

    Good to know, thanks!

Very Very well done. I think there is going to be a new place for people passionate and ambitious enough to make animation shorts of this caliber on there own. It is in my mind True Directing. I am 7 months deep on my own and I know how big of a project this truly is. Great job.
  • Gordon Pinkerton 9 months ago

    2. Could you reframe from being so vague in future comments please.

Why do you like it? The person that created the video deserves this to be able to improve his talent.
