Always wondered if it would work and today found a cheapy at Supercheap new for $29.
Has a travel of about 19cms.
Don't think it would work great for macro as the head moves forward about 5 cms on the way down but for anything with a depth of field greater should be fine. Wouldn't mind trying a wide angle converter up close next.

Variable speed and will take a camera up to 1400kgs. :)

Edit: Uploaded new footage with improvements. vimeo.com/2405669

Yep, that works. Great innovation Stephen. You've given me some ideas.

Knockout!!! Why didn’t I think of this . . . I’ve got one in the garage at the house, the plate is large enough to sit a camera on it - Isn’t Vimeo the greatest source for cool ideas.

You could replace the wheels with bigger rubber ones and then it could be a dolly as well.
Must say that Jack the Trolley Dolly sounds a bit weird! :)

    Share along your results.
This has a return spring that pulls it down with no weight on top. Might revise it by removing the spring and adding some weight. The spring makes a noise "ting" about 3/4 of the way down.

Great tip! Now I wonder to get same effect with my Xacti 1010 (only 300 gramms). Did you or anybody tried to lift it with a helium filled balloon yet? Just googled the even lighter Flip Mino Camcorder - Hot Air Balloon (picture quality equal to Sanyo? Don't think so!) watch youtube.com/watch?v=ryKQZvAJSj8

It has a return spring so it will work as long as the camera is secure. Balloon + camera = Bye bye with my luck! :)

Nice one, Stephen. Very clever. It gives a new meaning to the "fluid" head.
  • Stephen G 3 years ago
Thanks for commenting! Funny you should say that because I've just bolted a fluid head to it and the first tests are looking good.
Will post up a link when done.

I have uploaded some footage of what the jack can do with a fluid head bolted to it.

Great stuff, I just love clever innovation like this; where needs find a way in the face of financial challenge.
  • Stephen G 3 years ago
Thanks Greg! Maybe it will help a budding professional on a tight budget nail a movie.
(Remember me budding professionals when you hit the big time) lol!

Me hit the big time? Ha, ha. I'll most likely be uploading to Vimeo till I'm ninety. :)
