    so are those arms just 2D images that have been rigged somehow in the 3d software you're using?

    The characters are totally 2D, like playing cards, but they sit in 3D space in After Effects. This technique is called 2.5D

    I see, Its just that the way the arms bend makes them look rigged somehow, did you use the puppet tool in AE for that?
