"During the winter of 1930, a young explorer named August Courtauld spent 149 days alone, marooned on the desolate, featureless and bitterly cold Greenland ice-cap, taking weather readings from a small tent and with no communication to the outside world. Constant blizzards caused him to eventually become trapped and buried under the snow, entombed in a small, dark ice-chamber for the final 42 days. He never doubted that he would be rescued and finally on 5th May 1931, he was. His story was front-page news and is Arctic legend.
Inspired and captivated by his incredible story of courage and survival, his great niece Chloë Courtauld plans to retrace his steps onto the Greenland ice cap in Spring 2009.
This clip is a taster for the documentary currently in development and will be about both their stories.
Chloë's expedition is called the Ice Cap Station Arctic Challenge 2009. Her website will be up and running very soon with Video blogs and updates of her adventure. (icecapstation.com )
