    do you import your MTS files directly in Premier CS4? I heard it now handles native AVCHD... if so, if the MTS>MPG2 conversion as smooth and (almost) lossless as with TMPGEnc Xpress?

    yes, Premiere Pro CS4 has native support for AVCHD. Just drag and drop your MTS files. The only issue is the slow performance. AVCHD is very cpu intensive to decode, especially with effects/transitions applied. Better have many cores in your CPU and plenty of memory.
