by Matthew Brown. A Journey Into Leaves...The art of a handheld camera. It's like tai chi, but with the focus on the steadiness of the camera.

(If you know of a gallery or video installation this could be a part of, please let me know!! Thank you!)

I'm currently trying to find funding for a new project about seeing the world through the eyes of an autistic 9-year-old girl as she watches her family rip apart because of her disability. It's a very hard-hitting topic for me and a lot of other people, and I hope to present it with a decent budget. We are planning to shoot this Thanksgiving season, and anything would help! My paypal account is writingmatthew@hotmail.com If you can loan equipment, locations, props, etc, that would be much appreciated, too! Thank you!

    Nice video!
  •
  • Absolutely Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
Inspiring blend of natural and artificial.
Synced with music enough to be visually rewarding but not so much as to be predictable. One of the best videos on Vimeo.

Yeah, it really has changed the way I shoot things.

I just bought a Panasonic HDC-HS100...And when I watch movies like yours, I realize that I made a big mistake because, even if the panasonic as a lot of cool features, the image quality is very far behind the Canon's one...Very nice movie by the way! (sorry if I made mistakes, I'm not good in english)
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
You should love your camera. It has awesome image quality and can do wonders. Just shoot and edit a lot and you'll see that it'll do just as good of a job as the Canon, I promise.

Hey thank you! I didn't want to do the same old autumn leaf video with soft, classical music. I wanted to put more of an experimental turn into it. Thanks for the comment!

Autumn with tight glitchy editing. You've turned it on its head. Nice one! :)

this is one of those times where I beat myself up again because I get a flashback of being in the store holding a hv20, and deciding to get a different camera. bad decision on my part.

on another note, I really enjoyed this, good job editing, loved the way the music worked with it. was all that handheld?
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
Thank you so much man. You should just go out and get one. You won't regret it. Yeah, the video is handheld. I'm trying to master a sort of a tai chi movement with my entire body to make the camera movements flawless. I'm still working on it, haha. Thanks again for the comment! -Matt

awesome!!! ...beautiful colors and famous edit... I gotta click on the heart at any rate..;) btw. You've really used only HV30 and Vegas??? :o
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
Haha, yeah. It's the naked HV30 and Sony Vegas. At some point I might get an adapter or two, but it's suiting me fine at the moment without them. Thanks for hearting my video man!

The HV30 is great and all, but it's what you do with it that counts!! I love what you've done with it!!

Uhm wow, this is brilliant! It really is a journey. Is this filmed with a steadycam or just handheld? It has a very natural feeling. I'll have to watch this one a couple of times. Becouse I really liked the editing. Thanks for sharing.
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
Haha, thanks! Thanks for watching the video. It is all handheld. It took a few times to get the movements that smooth. It's like a tai chi kind of thing.

Beautiful video Matthew. I am expecting mine from Amazon on Wed. ($588 on sale! yeah). Could you enlighten us on the settings you used. Both on the camera and in editing. Love your work!
    Thanks!
    Matt
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
I set the aperture on the camera at 2.8 (which would normally make the colors bleed into a gross wall of blurred color, but somehow the lighting of the day let it have intense color without blowing it out).As far as editing, I just experimented with a few different things. Thank you for the comment, and I am excited that you're getting an HV30 in a couple of days! Enjoy it!

Amazing footage! What settings did you use on the camera?
  • Matthew Brown plus 1 year ago
Some of it is cinema mode, and in order to bring out the intense color I just opened the aperture to 2.8...watch out, though...if you try it it might blow out the colors you're shooting. The LCD screen can lie sometimes. I just had a good overcast day to help bring down the intensity enough to show the detail and intensity of the color at the same time. You could probably get the same effect by upping the contrast in post. It would probably be easier that way anyway. I was just testing the light when shooting. I hope that helps a little, haha. I hope I didn't ramble. Thanks for the comment man!

I like your "tai-chi" approach. I've often had to choreograph and practice a camera move before, doing it several times over to get it right (don't hold your breath too long!) So I know how you feel.

    Nice Video.......HEARTED IT!

Hey I loved your films. I'm about to get a camera and looking at your films convinced me on the HV30. I don't think my P4 desktop could edit AVCHD so miniDV is the option for me.

BTW which edition of Vegas do you use?
