3. World at War (5D Mark II vs XH A1)
Shot with Canon 5D Mark II and Canon XH A1
The objective is to see if 5D Mark II can achieve good video quality.
No post correction added.
Featuring - Forces of Valor U.S. 24th infantry division.
5D Mark II has a native 30F 1920x1080p format.
XH A1 was shot at 1440x1080i at 25F to achieve the film look.
Editing environment : CS3 at 30F 1920x1080p setting
Seemingly, 5D Mark II has brighter footage and better clarity thanks to its full frame digi4 cmos. On the contrary, XHA1 only has a 1/3" 3xCCD and it was deliberately set at 25F in this test, to mimic the flim look. There may be a element of loss as editing enviroment was not set for XHA1.
5D Mark II has better Depth of Field when compared to XHA1. However, 5D Mark II is way more difficult to control practically as it was not design for video shooting.

5D has so much richer colors and deep blacks! Win hands down!

25 fps actually give an unfair advantage to the XHA1 as it has 5 more frames over 30 to capture light... and yet the 5D MKII beat it easily ;-0

The 5D MK II footage is gorgeous... but it seems like the dynamic range of the XHA1 is better... or else the 5D footage just needs to have it's levels adjusted...

5D. And it's so much better that it's silly, really. Glad I have one inbound.

Needless to say, movie making on 5D has it's limitations and struggles. But for the IQ it produces, these are GREAT times for enthusiasts!

Only drawback is that I can't wait- I have to get a 5D mk2 now and they are bound to release 2-generation stuff fairly "soon" with many of the shortcomings addressed.

Thank you for the interesting footage.

Hey, what do you mean music by Sean Callery? That's Tricky!
Great test, thank you. Now I know what camera to get...

Andreè, are you sure there's already a 2-generation coming? Where did you hear that? I might wait and get a 24p if that's the case...
    thanx

I think for 5 series there will not be next generation soon. Last gerneration 5D was actually dated 3 years back at least.
But Canon will introduce video function to all DSLR. As long as the DSLR support liveview, recording is technically feasible.
I think XH A1 has a better film look at 24F. 5D Mark II produce more solid color. I'll try to set XH A1 at 50i/60i to reproduce a daily life video for better comparison in next project.

    I like the 5D better.

Does the 5D Mark II have auto focus while recording, or does it only have manual focus while recording?

    mannual focus only

Wow. Very tough to say with my uneducated eye. I do have a 5D on order though!

Great test. I also have the Canon 5d in order and will get it withing a few days. In all the footage I have seen the 5d has very dramatic depth of field which some people love, including myself, but I keep wondering that since the aperture cannot be controlled during video, how would you control the depth of field if you didn't want such a dramatic look? Is it even possible, do you know?
  • Dominic Sotirescu plus 6 months ago
The aperture can be controlled on the 5D2 during video in manual mode.

5d FTW! Color is much more vibrant and clear. Yes, you can save a picture profile through Canon's own software, then pull it up when recording to open up the crushed blacks (default setting is a bit harsh).

    Read here: dvinfo.net/conf/photo-hd-video-d-slr-others/138697-custom-colour-profile-application-canon-5dmk2.html

5d mkII also has less noise and grain in the shadows with low light, better edge rendering, much more film-like DOF, and an overal pop to it. The XH A1 looks like video all the way.

It is really hard to tell anything from this comparison... The 5dmk2 has a 1/30th shutter and probably autoexposure, and for some reason the A1 is set at 1/125th or 1/250th shutter and is always underexposed...

I dont see how this can compare anything. The 5dmk2 is receiving 4-8x less light (2-3 stops), and is not correctly exposed, so of course it's going to look washed out (i have found that the A1 doesnt handle underexposure well compared to other cameras in its range, it loses saturation and color clarity very quickly).

I'd be interested to see a test where you shoot the same angles with the same settings with the two cameras.

btw my 5dmk2 order should ship soon i hope!

and the markIII is out now :(, the addition of a 35 MM lense with a needed connection greatly enhances the optical view of the XH-A1. nice comparison and thanks for the notes.

Canon 5D gets my vote. As more stuff gets shot with it the more we become aware of the whole HD-DSLR cameras potential. Thanks for the test.

The 5D is very nice out of the camera. However, if you want to do any post coloring the range of color and information there is very limited. The xha1 is better for post work.

5DII - Not only great video.. but as a photographer I also get a perfect camera for all my needs. Currently saving up for one :)

I guess the only drawback is it's form. Not build for comfortable video recording. But than again.. it is a photo camera.

Just get a stabilizer (which you will need anyway if you intend to shoot seriously) and you get the same comfort - and with no other "con" left, it seems I lost my interest in the XH A1 - keeping in mind that I get two camera-types for less money with the 5DII.
