Here's a project we've been working on.
The goal is to take GoPro Hero HD fisheye footage shot in the 720p30 format (r2) and turn it into useful 720p30 hyper wide-angle shots with straight-line perspective.
The trick is to get as perfect perspective as is possible while trying to maintain as much image quality as possible. Yanking those corners into rectilinear perspective necessarily chews up some detail, by stretching pixels into compliance.
It's not perfect, but we think it's effective. What do you think?
Our other project flattens GoPro 1080p30 shots into super wide-angle image with great detail and virtually perfect rectilinear perspective (see vimeo.com/23509045), but we suspect that there is a lot of 720p material out there which has been begging to be flattened "someday."
That day just got closer.
Our current prototype takes about 50 minutes to process 54 seconds worth of material at 30 fps. All the shots used in this edit were 720p30 originals and the whole thing was edited before being flattened.
Music, as usual, is original.
Update: The Steadicam Smoothee GoPro Camera mount is available now. Separately, it costs around $25, or can be obtained with the Smoothee as an option.
It works with the GoPro Hero and GoPro Hero 2.
