I made this for my Halloween costume this year.

It's a 16x5 LED matrix installed inside a cheap motorcycle helmet I found on Amazon. I used the Arduino to program all the animations. (arduino.cc)

The LEDs are on cardboard, so I punched holes between every single LED and some larger slits around the sides in order to see out.

I distinctly remember doing most of the work on this helmet. Thanks for the shout out.

    No problem!

did this take you a while?

That is really cool. What controls the display, an Arduino? It's weird, I'm in the process of making the same type of video as I solder together this mini segmented LED display that will read out live Digg stats. But yours is cooler...by a lot.

edit: whoops just saw the description, Arduino it is

Who helped you animate the LED repeating patterns? Just curious because it looked fantastic!
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
I think it was my brother that designed some of the patterns.

  • Jason 3 years ago
    Holy crap!
    But can you see?
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
Yes, I can. The LEDs are on cardboard, so I just punched holes between every single LED and some larger slits around the sides. I could see pretty well.

Have you made the controller by yourself?
In about one year im a skilled eletrician, leds arent a problem, th programming is i guess :D
havent worked with microcontrollers yet, only with bigger controls like S7, but thats not what i'd need for sumthing like that i guess :D
  • Andrea Allen staff 3 years ago
Casey asked me for a bunch of help. I was happy to lend him my expertise.
  • Pikku 3 years ago
    haha ye sure :D
    (for real?)

damn im so bad in noticing irony...
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
She helped cut the wires :)

I used the Arduino's microcontroller (ATmega168). You should check out arduino.cc. The Arduino makes hardware programming super simple!

Pretty nice advise, thanks for sharing :)

love daft. love the helmet. was it tough breathing in that thing?
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
Very hard to breathe! I could only wear it for brief periods of time before I'd start sweating and panting. I should drill in some more breathing holes.

    I agree. Awesome vid though!

Just wondering, where did you run all the wires to?
  •
  • Davis 3 years ago
i can say firsthand that wearing this helmet made you feel like you were from the future.

i can also say firsthand that i think i drunkenly halfway broke it. sorry!

LED board is cool. but i'm sorry, it looks nothing like either of the Daft Punk helmets. good try though.
  • Casey Pugh plus 3 years ago
Yea, I wanted to do some plastic molding to make it look more like one of the originals. Unfortunately, Halloween crept up too quickly.

Casey, I was looking at doing something similar for Halloween this year! I want to do a 36x11 board but I cant figure out the whole arduino thing as was hoping you could help me understand it a bit more.

I enjoyed your video -- and found your costume idea pretty awesome -- but man, you need to conclude the time-lapse by showing you and your costume in action. (That still shot at the beginning is tantalizing -- but it just isn't enough!)

I was put in mind of the robot in the original The Day the Earth Stood Still ... and the robocops in THX 1138. (And speaking of George Lucas, I got a kick out of your Star Wars Uncut trailer, too. Nicely done, sir.)
