Late on the 21st of May 2011 the Grímsvötn volcano erupted. We drove east towards Selfoss and Laugarvatn to see if we could see the eruption, but all we saw was a massive ash cloud blanketing the south of Iceland.
It was brown, everywhere. It was like my eyes had a sepia filter. It felt like it was the day after the apocalypse. When we got back to Reykjavik we realised we and the car were covered in a fine film of ash.
