IN SEARCH FOR THE DARK NIGHT SKIES IN LIGHT POLLUTED LOCATIONS

This Video is featured on NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC:

newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2011/05/26/new-mountain-timelapse-a-soundgarden-of-night-lights/

and now parts of the footage are featured in the newest ESO podcast:

eso.org/public/announcements/ann11051/

First of all Black Hole Sun is a statement against light pollution and waste of energy - especially in the European alps. The west and eastern alps offer some of the last remote places where you and your kids can enjoy the beauty of a starry, clear, nightsky, which is the same for all people: one people, one sky!

By contrasting footage of highly lit cities and frequented traffic ways in the tyrol inn-valley with surrounding dark valleys and mountains, I was able to show some effects of light pollution, which hinders us from watching a clear, starry night sky.

Light pollution increases during winter time due to inversion which results in smog in the valleys. inversion means that a heated, polluted layer of air on a valley's bottom is separated from cold, fresh air above. this polluted air causes health problems, especially with children. In some parts of the footage one can see inversion.

Second, Black Hole Sun also shows my dedication to the beautiful mountains in the Alps. I hope you enjoy the scenery as much as I do.

Location: Tyrol (around Innsbruck), Austria, La Palma (Canary Islands), Dolomites (Gröden).

Really is one of the most impressive timelapses I have seen, love the snapshots of BTS at the end, the 'fireball' and most importantly a great message :) [TFA30]

hi simon, thank you - good to hear that from a professional camera man.

I am not so happy yet with the versions e.g. for iPhone (turned out to bee to dark, corrected that) and iPad, but I am working on that.

Dude... that was freakin' awesome. I really want to get into this kind of photography but can't seem to find the time to go out far from where I am where there's too much light pollution. Also, Florida doesn't make for such awesome scenes due to the lack of other neat landscape features like mountains and such.

    What lens(es) do you use?

EDIT: You mentioned the lenses... I feel dumb now.
  • Christoph Malin plus 8 months ago
no problem. just try to get out after rainfalls or so, when the air is cleaner. maybe you also want to try on the weekend so you could go out with a tent and take footage all night. then it is worth a longer travel to a nice location. for all kinds location questions timescapes.org is the place to go. you could also see some astronomic forums, they usually also have nice tipps for locations. kind regards, chris

Great work man. Maybe think about doing a dissolve before the pan/camera motion stops, would make the edit more fluid.)
  • Christoph Malin plus 7 months ago
yes, I usually do... however, since it is cut to the music it sometimes just doesn't work out to dissolve before the movement stops if clips before are too short... cheers

How is the setting on camera? AV or TV? because I have some problems when the brightness change from the night at the day...(((( is not so linear as you)))
  • Christoph Malin plus 6 months ago
hi, on the new la palma video I once again tried different settings (Nikon: P or A as well as ISO Auto). Results are mixed. Important is that at the time of sunset or rise you sit directly beside the camera, watch the histogram and do exposure corrections within 30second intervals. light is changing on sunrise or sunset pretty fast. the rest I do in Post with Aperture and GBD (granite bay deflicker for Premiere CS5).

Spectacular shots - and yes you demonstrate very clearly the impact of light pollution on watching the night sky.

One way to escape it, come down under to Australia. There are vast tracts of my home continent without a living soul for hundreds of sqkm.

Very nice. Kinda like the effects of the light pollution myself. I know you're making an environmental message, and I know what it is to enjoy the stars away from the city but still, you have to admit that it has it's own beauty. As for not being able to see the night sky in or near cities, how many folks in the city even care about what's going on in the skies above them, or anything outside of their own particular grid. On the music, I'm really glad you didn't settle for something typical like Pink Floyd or Tool. If you do another T-lapse video like this, or if you just want to experience this one a little differently, try it with a track called "Firdous E Bareen" by Isis. So amazing.

    Wonderful work!

i had light pollution problems for when I shot the moon setting over the Mersey for my Liverpool time lapse film: vimeo.com/26492449

i loved the contrast of dark valleys and cities you shot. it punches home the effect light has on our night sky and our ability to enjoy it.

On another pollution related issue, I remember when the Icelandic volcano erupted and planes were grounded here in the UK, after just a couple of days with no planes in the sky, I was amazed to see how blue the sky was. Without all the planes flying about, the sky was clear of pollution, the sky was a brilliant blue.
the blue sky above us today is somewhat creamy light blue, nowhere near how beautiful the sky was when the planes were grounded.

so what would be nice is, if every now and then, the planes would stop flying, and the lights went out over cities and we could see something wonderful
