A first test of the Canon 5D MK II 's video-function. Shot at ISO 800 with EF 300mm/2,8 + 2x Ext. at f 5,6 and EF 28mm/1,8 at f 1,8 and f 22.

I shot these scenes at Harz Mountain National Park in Northern Germany where they have a very successful Lynx reintroduction program. The Lynx in this video live in an enclosure to show park visitors what they look like and how they live. The enclosure is the public relations part of the reintroduction program.

How do you know you shot this at 800 ISO ? Is there a way to tell ?

beautiful, until i read your blurb i didn't realise the cats were in an enclosure. i thought you were in the wild with them. ha.

i had been wondering how this camera would perform in bright light, as lots of other examples have shown off the low light capabilities of the 5dMarkII.

can't get much brighter than snow :)

    Beautiful work, Stefan... really stunning.

    Quick question:
I just received my production-model 5D2 this week, and I'm dying to know how you're able to control your exposure settings while shooting video.

Everything I'm experiencing with it tells me it's all automated, but your previous comment was "You can adjust the settings and block them." Can you explain that a little better?

Other than using the * button to lock-in the current auto-exposure, I find no other way to control the settings. What I wouldn't give to at least be able to choose my f-stop.

    Thoughts? Thanks much!

    -eaa
  •
  • Stefan Sobotta plus 11 months ago
that's the way to go: AV-mode, select f-stop and press *
  •
  • Eric A Anderson 11 months ago
Hmmm. Are you using a pre-production model, or one of the final ones released just this past week?

On my camera, even in aperture priority mode (AV), dialing the aperture wheel does absolutely nothing while in live-view. The aperture always seems to use the widest setting available on the lens (4.0 in the case of the 24-105). I've checked around on other sites, and that seems to be the consensus with Canon's final version of this camera.

Here's a statement Vincent Laforet made in the comments section of his 11/26/08 blog post:

"unfortunately you DO have to trick the camera… it is not Aperture priority. I was led to believe (innocently - as there was very little information available at the time) that you would be able to do this - perhaps with the production camera - but it looks like there will be no true Aperture priority mode on the production camera at this point. It’s disappointing to say the least. Not real sure why Canon is not allowing true Aperture priority mode - all of the buttons/settings/menu items are in place. Forget 24p - Aperture priority (where you can set your aperture, and ISO) are much more important in my opinion."

As someone who primarily picked this machine up for it's video capability, I find this a bit aggravating. I was hoping maybe you'd discovered some slick workaround, but I'm guessing yours has different, pre-release firmware.

I really appreciate your quick response, tho!

Using non Canon lenses with a mechanical aperture ring seems to be the best choice.
  •
  • Eric A Anderson 11 months ago
Yup. Same conclusion I am reaching. Canon is going to be helping to sell a lot of Nikon glass.

Beautiful shots, beautiful animals. The lynx were obviously curious and unafraid. The one that kept trying to get closer to you, reminded me a bit of my cat when she is 'play stalking' me. You are very privileged - in the wild you'd never see them - or only very rarely, and even more briefly.

    Hi Stefan.
    Beutiful video, really... well done.
it would be very nice of you if you could share with the community the ORIGINAL 5d.mov file to download.
Nobody does so far and it reaaly is an important issue for future 5d buyers to be able to check uncompressed data to really understand the quality of the video...

    please...

Very nice work. I'll second asking that you share the original upload file. I would love to convert it with mpeg slipstream to a .dv SD file so I could view it on my SD editing system. If it looked good then I am going to buy the Mark II and upgrade to an HD editing system.

    Hi all,
Sorry if i'm going off topic and using your video for some technical help! Great video by the way.
EOS Utility keeps crashing half way through transferring video files. They are about 11 minutes in length at 1920x1080. I've had no problem transferring a whole cards worth of shorter 1 minute clips.

I'm on OSX 10.5.6., using EOS Utility 2.5.1. I'm using an 8GB SanDisk Extreme IV card. I'm on a 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB Ram Macbook Pro.

Has anybody else had this problem, or suggest what the issue may be? Is there a maximum file size limit? The manual doesn't mention this. I'd guess an 11 minute clip is about 3.5 GB. I've even tried reinstalling the EOS software and formatting the memory card with no luck.

Any help would be great, i'm pulling my hair out!

  •
  • jim worsley 10 months ago
It's very annoying. I've found that if the video is over 4 minutes i have to pull them off one at a time, or it crashes the entire machine.
  •
  • jim worsley 10 months ago
ha exactly! I just have to take them off the card one at a time if they are long videos. Strange, i've not encountered anyone else with these issues!
  •
  • Daniel Dides 10 months ago
Very amazing video Stefan. The shots of the trees at the beginning knocked me and my brother out of our seats. Absolutely gorgeous looking.

How's the autofocus, or just focus in general on that thing? At some points it looked like you were struggling to focus it, and during the last few seconds, as the lynx ran away, you seemed to lose the focus entirely.
