It’s December, and the sun beckons south to Art Basel Miami and its companion art fairs. Once again, there is a substantial Canadian presence at the fairs and also Canadian roots to a special exhibition of works on paper by New York Pop-art veteran Alex Katz at the Gallery at Windsor in Vero Beach, north of Miami.

Windsor is the niche art gallery launched in 2002 by Alannah Weston of Canada’s Weston family. Curator of this year’s Katz show is Art Gallery of Ontario contemporary curator David Moos. Katz’s restrained graphic approach is everywhere in evidence in “Alex Katz: Seeing, Drawing, Making,” which features 60 figurative works and landscapes that open a window onto the artist’s creative process. A highlight of the show is a series of works from the 1980s that relate to dance performance. As always with Katz, his economical approach results in a complex visual density. In recent decades, the landscapes in particular have become masterly with their vivid brushwork and lyrical colour. (3125 Windsor Blvd, Vero Beach FL)
