Sharing the crisp December air with some friends.

This is the first test footage from my Nikon D90. And there would have also been much more, but i kept wanting to skate.

agreed, looks awesome. get that exposure locked up and itll look epic!(unless that was a design choice) any color correction in post?
  • BUTTER FILMS 1 year ago
Thanks guys... and yeah... i did a lot in post to get it to look like that: color correction, vingetting, light flashes, etc... and locking the exposure would have been a good thing to do. I didn't know that the camera could do it at the time, but i recently read it on the internet. good to know...

I already have a Digital SLR, so I guess for $1000 I need a good video camera. But I suppose with the D90 you could throw a Tilt/Shift on there and shoot some wild stuff too. I'll be looking for your next one!

would you be able to let me know what music this is? i could really use somehting like that
  • BUTTER FILMS 1 year ago
This song is actually from the movie American Beauty. But if you are looking for something sort of similar, i would REALLY recommend anything from The Album Leaf. They are one of my favorite bands and I use their stuff quite frequently...

How did you hold the camera? Just bare hands or did you use a steadicam of some type? Great footage, especially liked the vibrancy at dusk.
  • BUTTER FILMS 1 year ago
Thank You. Just held it in my hands. Which is kind of noticable because the camera has no sort of stabilization whatsoever. Some of the footey is skating though.

This was great! I love the photography (cinematography?) and the angles, and the use of manual focus (although it was a bit erratic towards the end). Also you chose the best time of day to do it and so the light was soft and just beautiful! I think you have done an amazing work editing this, the only thing that bothered me was the music: I remember this piece from "American Beauty", at the beginning of your movie it was very subtle and created the atmosphere, but ultimately I felt that it was just too sad...
Either way, nice work! Keep posting

Thank you very much for your comment! I chose the song because I wanted to give it a bit more of a somber tone, almost like I'm looking back on the good times, sort of a bittersweet home video feel. And thanks again.
  • hype22 11 months ago
Like your video.. and all HDR works but I have to agree with Tom.. : the exposure became a bit disturbing in the second half of the video.. I'm sure you figured out by now how to lock it up.. Good saturation, also.
    Great work, congrats !

  • BUTTER FILMS 11 months ago
I did a fair share of color correcting in FCP.
  •
  • Sarah Frank plus 11 months ago
    Love it!
But I'm curious, what's the memory situation on the D90? Still using compact flash cards? How much memory does the video function take up? I mean, the HD quality is stunning! Is it just eating memory like crazy?
  • BUTTER FILMS 11 months ago
Not really. I have an 8GB and a 4GB SD card and between the two, my rough math estimates that i can get about 2 hours of footey between the two.
  •
  • Chris Munro 11 months ago
    Stunning video, I "liked" it.

Just out of curiosity which video editing software and if any, which plug-ins did you use? More specifically how did that vignetting effect so perfect and subtle?
  • BUTTER FILMS 11 months ago
Thanks man. I edited it in Final Cut Pro. And as far as the vignette, it is just something i kind of made up. I took a circle out of the "shapes" folder in the "video generators" and dramatically increased the size and amount of edge feather. Then you ctrl click the circle and under composite mode (i believe) you click either multiply or overlay. Just play around the with this idea and settings until you get something good. I change it up every time.

To think that this came from a D-SLR is mind blowing. Awesome work on the post work!!! How's the D90 working out?
  • BUTTER FILMS 11 months ago
Very good. Thanks for the comment. I'm actually going to be filming a commercial with it tomorrow. And the client actually owns a Native HD Sony camera, which is beyond amazing, but we are going to be using the D90 for it's extreme Depth of field capabilities, giving it a much more personal, detail oriented feeling. I'll probably post it on vimeo when it's finished.

That's really cool you're shooting on the D90. Can't wait to see it.

It is AMAZING!!! Just love the whole mood that was captured. But didn't you get that skewing problem that occurs in the D90?
  • BUTTER FILMS 11 months ago
yeah. i just edited out most of the bad spots. if you look close, you can still see some of it.
  • Justin Gardner 11 months ago
Sometimes the bad parts for you are the good parts for others.
