At a star party in August 2009 I took my first long exposure photograph of the night sky. I was so thrilled with the results that I dedicated most moonless weekends since then to photographing two things I love the most in nature - the night sky and the Ocean.

Taking a series of images and combining them into a time lapse video sequence made it even more interesting. I have since experimented with all-night time lapses, panning motion, etc. But most importantly I've enjoyed the journey immensely.

This time lapse video is the result of almost 1.5 years of work, 31 hours of taking images during six nights on Southern Ocean Coast in Australia.

Ocean Sky was awarded the overall winner prize at STARMUS astrophotography competition:

Alex, this is awesome, impressive work! I have just completed a project very similar to this, getting some good attention here: vimeo.com/25023898

You really need to send this around to some astronomy websites, Gizmodo, Astronomy Pic of the Day, etc.. This deserves way more than 50 views so far!

Do you mind if I ask - did you do the panning in post or are you using motion control? it looks great.

I'm really impressed, please keep this up!

I want to add, the moon / Milky way shot at 1:16 is really stunning. I like how you stayed with these shots for a long, long time, I know how much "real time" this takes. Nice work!

I didn't just watch Ocean Sky; I drank it. And as I drank, I felt the part of my soul that thirsts for truth, beauty and awareness become sublimely sated.
Thank you, Alex, for this brilliant and elegant piece of film making.
I have spent many a clear and moonless night walking Maui's remotest beaches and shorelines, far from the hotels and resorts. Being face to face with the galaxy in which we live inspires a profound and ecstatic sense of timelessness and oneness with all that is. It is as if the universe becomes conscious of itself through our eyes. I believe that this same inspiration has been shared by and links everyone who has ever had the good fortune to be under a very dark sky on a very clear night, since the dawn of man. To me, this is the underpinning of spiritual awareness
To that equation, add the dynamism of the ocean, with it's complex interplay of waves and eddies, from whence all life has emerged and the awe factor just explodes my brain.
No one has captured and conveyed that sense of deep astronomical existential mysticism more thoroughly than Alex Cherny, in this remarkable motion picture.
    Kudos.

What Robert said. (thumbs way up)

We recently placed the last atoms of a beloved in the ocean, in Maine. His soul left Vermont on a cold night in March. His name was Josh. He was 37, and he commited suicide. And he was our son.

Before his remains dissipated in the water, his infant niece, (who I think he passed by on his way to the Universe....) crawled into the ocean. Without fear. Pure joy...!

And I have a friend, a retired minister, that does not believe in any afterlife. For him the soul stops at death. Period. I respect his knowledge and his insight. But...I sent him this video. Just in case he's wrong. (wink)

    Thanks for the beauty,
