André, congratulations – what a wonderful piece this is. The convergence between music and images is in perfect sync, and your video becomes this larger third thing.

And the way you portray the buildings as well, it has that important emotional touch that makes the idea less gimmicky and more real, in a way. The light in the windows come through as a signal of life, instead of a piece of animated pixels.

    Really good work!

Wonderful! The variations in the animated interpretations of the music are always fascinating - but what nature is doing as a backdrop in the sky (plus airplanes, UFO's, drones, etc...) and all the sped up night activity in the foreground makes for a wonderful composition. Just the moon-set (!!) is worth the price of admission. Very nice song as well.
Excellent job, André and Audun, and not least: all the thousands of people in those flats who managed to turn their lights on and off so precisely! Groruddalen rocks!
  • Karsten Meinich 8 months ago
Yeah, I forgot about all those thousands of people behind the windows in all the apartments in Groruddalen! Awesome job. ;)

I'm always impressed when videos like this surface - just the scale of the concept seems so daunting. And just keep watching because it only gets better and fits perfectly with the tone of the song. It's like someone was sitting on the balcony of their hotel suite late at night listening to this song and thought this up.

    Wonderful André, love it!
So much going on and all in sync whether subtle or not. New things to see on each viewing. A lot of hard work pays off, and your work is the proof of that. Thanks for sharing it here. How many light switches are being pulled right now I wonder...

If we ever get around to organising the next Painting with Light Festival... I'd love it to be part of the screenings program!
  • André Chocron plus 8 months ago
Thanks for your kind comment Alex! It would be great to screen it at your festival :) Is that Asolo or something else?
  • Alex Rowbotham 8 months ago
It was intended that the Painting with Light Festival should not be fixed to one location. The last one in 2008 was in Val Venosta, Alto Adige, Italy multivisione.com. We are searching for other places for our next one... Norway perhaps? :-)
  • André Chocron plus 8 months ago
Tromsø in the winter would be a great venue! You'll probably even get some aurora, nature's own lightshow :)

I found a link to your video at fcp.co or I might not have seen it even though I am a vimeo.com member too. I feel grateful that I was able to see your work. I imagine the cooperation of thousands of people who agreed to keep their apartments dark except for your electronic control of their lights to make the timing sync with the music was as amazing as your brilliant idea to make this video!

Your innovative work is at the top of your professional peers! Thank you. - Mark

  • FMWebCMS plus 7 months ago
I was wrong about electronic control of the apartment lights to sync to music. You did it yourself with great technical skill and perseverance!

"The process was pretty much this: We shot timelapse from early evening to the middle of the night, with most of the apartments illuminated for the first couple of hours and most of the apartments dark for the last couple of hours. I used the darkest part as the foundation for the individual sequences, and masked out all windows that were still lit, so that all windows were dark.
Next I made an individual layer for each window with lights on, by using the footage from the early evening. I organized them by creating a masterclip for each window, giving them sequential names and putting them in a grid.
I then put these individual clips on top of the sequence with dark windows to animate the lights going on and off.

PS I used the 4-point-mask, that took some patience...."

Wow, he's not kidding, anybody who has used an internal mask within FCP will know how long things take! Many thanks for getting in touch André.
