1. Font generator / processing : prototyp-0
8 months ago

Great application! Is this being developed in an academic environment? (master, phd,...)
What did you use to program it? (processing.org ?)
    Does it export data/vectors?
Is the typeface shape/structure fixed or you can load a different drawing/structure?
Keep up the great work and keep us posted, please!
  • yannick mathey 8 months ago
Yes it was for my diploma and I used processing because it's a simple and powerful language. It contains many libraries to export vectors, etc. For the moment prototyp-0 has one only shape for each glyph, but it will be developed after the release for more capacities (import, etc). I'm working on it, and I hope post more videos soon… keep tuned!

Wow Yannick this is really interesting, I have seen similar projects that explore the basis of creating variable type through exploration of the quantitative constructive parameters. One specifically fused audio frequencies, producing some unique syncopated results, But reading into your comments, the development of this sounds very interesting. So, would this available for Beta testing? I think a lot of us would love to play?
I also see this being a really fun learning tool. Should the software be written to understand traditional type faces, it maybe possible to uncover fonts through the art of play? For example in navigating the San Serif parameters you may uncover Akzidenz Grotesk, Futura, Meta etc and learn abut there respected histories?
  • yannick mathey 8 months ago
I don't know if we can discover new styles as well as futura, etc. but prototyp-0 can generate some astonishing forms, that wouldn't necessarily be done manually with a pencil. I think this is the level where it gets interesting: this software doesn't pretend to replace the type designer, but also give a basis for work and find original ways. After it's true that I try to get as close as possible to cast a ready to use, and I hope it will help some people. I'm working on it when I have a free time and if you want to try the beta when it will be available, you can follow me on Twitter: @bytefoundry. Thank you!

Yannick! This is amazing! Is it a desktop app or web? Mac or PC? I would LOVE to get/buy a copy of "prototypo". What can I do to get my hands on it?
  • yannick mathey 8 months ago
Tks ! It's a web app built on processing, Mac and PC OS, but still in development... be patient !

Really great application!! Did you use a lib or PShape to manipulate the glyphs? Or you made your own classes to hold the vectorial info?

    Vraiment magnifique!
  •
  • yannick mathey 6 months ago
Tks! I used many libs for the UI interface and export system but the glyph's manipulation is a "home-made" class, with, as you may guess, many parameters
