A Toronto based composer discovers a historic treasure and pays homage to Goethe's famous quote 'Architecture is frozen music'. This intriguing exploration of a monument that houses the largest pipe organ in Canada and the oldest carillon in North America, shows us that Toronto is much more than the Wall Street of Canada.
What is a carillon? Carillon is a set of over 22 tuned bells. Music could be played by a giant, keyboard like mechanism, which is connected to the clappers that hit the bells. In this documentary, the official "carillonneur" Gerald Martindale, gives a delightful presentation of the instrument, along with its history, tradition and its 54 bells, which were assembled from three different countries in Europe over a period of five decades. He also explains how the instrument works to a composer who attempts to write for it.
Musical Director and Organist, Dr. Patricia Wright demonstrates the unthinkable power of the pipe organ and serenades us with a majestic performance. In addition, The Rev. Dr. John Joseph Mastandrea tunes our ears into the mystic songs that resonate in every corner of this magical sanctuary.
