This is the perfect opportunity for a Carl Sagan quote:

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known."

The footage in this little film was captured by the hardworking men and women at NASA and The European Space Agency with the Cassini Imaging Science System. If you're interested in learning more about Cassini and the on-going Cassini Solstice Mission, check it out at NASA's website:

Really beautiful. When you say "footage", do you mean these are mostly sequences of stills, or was this stuff captured with the intent of motion?

The typography is really perfect too. Thank you for making this.
  • Chris Abbas plus 8 months ago
Hey Bryn! Thanks so much for the comments, you are too kind. Yes indeed, by footage I mean stills. I had to download a large archive of images to find the shots I used. I'm not certain why the spacecraft shoots images sequentially over time, but I'm super pumped that it does!
  • Borek Lupomesky 8 months ago
    Sequences are made to:
    a) study things in motion (rotating rings, occultations, interaction between rings an moons etc.)
    b) to make multispectral images (though these are taken in tight sequences, so the motion is minimal).

BTW, did you send this to Mrs. Carolyn Porco? She's ISS principal investigator I think and I'm sure she'd be delighted.
  • Chris Abbas plus 8 months ago
Thanks for the explanation, Borek. I have not been in touch with Mrs. Carolyn Porco, but will most definitely reach out to her. Cheers.

This is really lovely. Where did you find the high quality video / sources that you used? I've often searched Nasa imagery, but can't find movie sources that look as nice as what you found, unless you are using all stills, which makes this even more impressive.

You built a lovely mood with this piece, its a great study. Very well done.
  • Chris Abbas plus 8 months ago
    Hey there, I pulled the stills from 2 sources: A. saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/ and B. pds-rings.seti.org/cassini/iss/access.html

Thank you very much for getting back to me. Again, really well done!

Nice stuff, I've looked at a lot of those images, I could ID a lot of stuff there. You caught a Titan encounter, an Iapetus encounter, and long sequences of the F Ring, plus a bunch of other stuff. The end star trails are navigation system calibration runs, the spacecraft uses spinning wheels to stabilize itself, and needs to be checked on.
  • Chris Abbas plus 8 months ago
That's awesome. Thank you for identifying the shots, kind sir! Who knew self-stabilization procedures could be so interesting?

Hi Chris, was going to post the link to Semiconductor's work but see someone beat me to it. Make sure you see their BRILLIANT NOISE, too, if you haven't: blog.artabase.net/?p=1787 Beautiful, beautiful work here, and like Semiconductor's work, CASSINI MISSION hits that science/art interface in such a tasty way. I see from your reel you worked on the HOUSE open, too... another piece I admire. Like like like.
  • Chris Abbas plus 8 months ago
Ah yes, I was made aware of Semiconductor's work after uploading the film. I only wish I had the opportunity to experience their multi-screen, HD installations when they were being exhibited. It must have been an amazing experience!
  •
  • Tex-Films 8 months ago
Good stuff! Personally I thought the frames changed way too fast to absorb the beauty of those images and there were too many flashy effects that weren't necessary, but great effort!
