Shouldn't the Olympics look more like this; real amateur athletes, risk-taking, commitment, passion - and all with no financial incentive - not the mention the entertainment value.

Despite miserable weather and various attempts to restrict, commercialise and undermine the event, the Gloucester Cheese Rolling Championship 2011 was a great success. Superb work by all the participants, organisers and supporters.

The race is a long-standing Gloucester tradition thought to have its origins in a ritual celebration of Spring. Competitors chase an 8lb Double Gloucester cheese down a 2:1 gradient. The first person to the bottom wins the cheese. Unusually this year's race passed off without serious injury.
