Just a quick and dirty test of the 5D2 with a Nikon-compatible Sigma 28-300 f/3.5-6.3 with EOS adapter (which allows you to control iris on the 5D2 in video mode). No color correcting or anything.

This proves what I've always felt!.. This was a damn good video taken with a cheap lens, and to tell you the truth, I couldn't even tell the difference!.. Way to go Tom!...
  • Steven Wu 10 months ago
I agree. With digital video we are taking the transfer step out of the equation, no more generational loss. Cheap lenses like these now provide more than adequate results...make that, great results. Excellent video Tom!

Sounds good. When I get back from Joshua Tree I will send you a PM at 5Dcinema. I really would like to try out your follow-focus rig. Maybe shoot at Santa Monica or something?

The quality of the "cheapo" lens is amazing! One question... how did you adjust the aperture on the lens? I've researched this lens and it doesn't have an aperture ring.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 11 months ago
Kyle, the Nikon version does have an iris ring.

    here is a link...

    bhphotovideo.com/c/product/389309-REG/Sigma_795306_28_300mm_f_3_5_6_3_DG_Macro.html

Keep in mind that in video mode, the 5D2 is only a 2- or 3MP camera, so the lens doesn't need to be super awesome in terms of resolving power.

why is there vignetting on the pictures, is that due to the cheap lense and slow f?

    might be the lens, yeah.

HOLY CRAP its everything i expected it to be. i have been shooting with my 5d for a year and just saw the 5D mk2 in a PC photo mag that has been sitting at my parents house. i instantly wanted to upgrade. in my line of work some video footage is necessary for documentary purposes. my only question is how much memory and battery life does the video mode use up. PS. the video quality looks amazing.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 11 months ago
i shot for 2 hours straight and barely put a dent in the battery. i went through one 8GB card and one 16GB (a $50 x233 Ridata CF). you could shoot all day with just a few cards and batteries in your pocket. completely amazing.

Nice test Tom. Gotta say, I'm jealous! I've been drooling after one of those.

Please let me know how it performs under the stars., becuase I'm still very tempted, but I'm a bit concerned about light gather on a 21MP chip, even though it is full-frame.

Hi Tom. I have had the 5Dmk2 for a week know and was interested to see you using an adapter to gain control of the aperture which after using the Video Mode have realised that the camera automatically opens and closes the aperture depending on the available light. Bright light, small aperture, deep depth of field.

I was going to trick the camera by using a neutral density filter to reduce the light coming into the camera hence creating a shallower depth of field. Tradeoff more noise Shit!!!!

Are you using older film type lenses with manual aperture controls to get your depth of field?

Low light stills capability is amazing. Video cant match stills but compared to my XHA1 it kicks its arse.

Do you know anyone who wants an obsolete XHA1.

Nikon compatible lenses with iris rings are the way to go, I think. Then you have full control over iris. Also, you can set ISO by doing this...

    1. Stop the lens down to f/22.

    2. Point the camera at a very bright light source.

    3. Lock Auto Exposure. Now your ISO should be low, like ISO 200 or 400 or 640.

    4. Open the iris to let in more light, and simply use the iris to properly expose your shot.

  • Herbie Pabst plus 11 months ago
Great stuff! That camera is awesome.

When using the Nikon lens were you able to lock the shutter? If so, does the 5DMkII auto adjust the iso to control the exposure or can you lock that too?

I have a half dozen Nikon primes that I use with a Letus Mini/HV20. Your video has fired me up about the possibility of using them with a 5DMkII.
  •
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 11 months ago
Herbie, see my post above about controlling the ISO. I have not personally tried to lock the shutter speed, but I have seen it done. It is possible. There is a test video somewhere here on vimeo showing how to do it and what it looks like.

Hi Tom, great test. Nice soothing look. :) This scenery has a few objects that would provoke aliasing. What is your experience with "the jaggies" with this setup. They should have been seen on the diagonal cranes on the oil rig, but they are gone! Can they be avoided with a cheap "soft" lens, or is this about settings? Or am I just plain wrong? Thanks. Th:o)mmes, Norway.
  •
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 10 months ago
I tend to get those jaggies any time there is a horizontal white line in the image, like white parking lines in a parking lot. The trouble is, you never know when and where artifacts might pop up. It's one of the drawbacks of the 5D2. Probably experience is the only way to know how to avoid it. I don't think the lens matters, but I have not done any tests yet.

I really want to know more about the EOS adapter, which one you use, if it can harm the Nikon lens, etc.
I have all Nikon D series with aperture rings so this tech would be perfect for me but am concerned with getting the correct EOS adapter and its possible side effects?
    Thanks for the great post.

Tom, so do the RiData CF cards perform well for the video mode of 5DMKII? I'm shopping 32GB cards and RiData's is the least expensive.
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 4 months ago
Chris, I think the Transcend 32GB cards are more reliable, at least in my experience.

    Very good shoots!!

Tell me something, I notice that my shoots when I play in the computer (mac Pro) the play it´s not constant, like it drop frames in some parts of the clip, but the strange thing, it´s that these drop frames appear even when I convert the original clip in to a pro res or quicktime DV.
Do you thin I need a special codec to install for a good play back?

Thanks, and sorry my little english

    Charies
  • Tom @ Timescapes plus 15 days ago
I'm not too sure about that. maybe a problem with the CF card? once you convert to Pro Res, it should be fine.
