I have grown a garden that merges the karesansui Zen Buddhist gardens of Japan with the American cartoon character of a bindlestiff, placed within Southern Californian hippie culture. It is a metaphorical piece about the spread of culture through gardens, the merging and ultimate degeneration of meaning. The cultivation karesansui within arid climates has potential as a solution to the problem of delicate water supply in arid climates. According to Buddhist scripture, the historical Buddha taught the impermanence of existence, individual enlightenment and the liberation of all beings. Like sand through the hourglass so are the days of our lives.
