I really like this song, and others by Saul Williams. I discovered him initially from an appearance on a Blackalicious album ("Release" from Blazing Arrow). Then I rediscovered him after Zach saw him live and gave me the CD. I liked this song for a while and wanted to do a lip dub, but somehow I didn't feel right doing it in NYC.

In a Reykjavic graveyard, though... it was like, "yeah, this feels right, let's shoot it, Anna!" and we walked back to the hotel, I practiced a few times in the mirror, and we went back and shot it.

Your gesture for white at 1:43 is perfect.

(are you replacing it because the audio was off? it is being converted now but I just watched it)
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
shit, the audio was off? I was just sending it through as a higher bitrate. we'll see what happens.
  • chriskalani 1 year ago
I don't know if it was a technical thing or you just didn't keep up... it just wasn't as pro as your usual dubs... whatever though, we all get out of shape from time to time.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
well, there's a difference between missing a word here and there, and every word being off by an amount of time that gradually and constantly increases as the video progresses.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
    FUCK YOU GUYS. this is Vimeo. you are not allowed to say negative or critical things! {ACCOUNT TERMINATED}
  • Ben 1 year ago
I shouldn't really say anything negative, I haven't ever tried to make a lip dub.

Did you throw that invisible flute when you were done with it?? Seriously man, some poor invisible flautist could have used it.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
who do you think I was throwing it to?!
  • Wavewash 1 year ago
I pictured a circus clown catching it and then promptly blowing up in a shower of sparks and confetti and then fireworks went off that spelled "RAZZ MA TAZZ" in the sky.

So clean, detailed and you didn't color enhance this at all. The beats at 2:11 got me going. The part when you slipped off camera 4:18 and popped on was a perfect non-edit. Very nice.

I was going to insert some expletives above as a joke but had enough fun on my own.

I covet that camera. Covet. Covet. Covet.
  • Phenick 1 year ago
The slipping off camera was my favorite part as well seemed so pre-planned... Anna did a wonderful job on camera in this.

Jake: Did you guys spend time talking about what youd do before hand she seemed prepared to follow you throughout the whole thing... Pretty awesome!

did you know that you ended this in exactly the same way British comedians Morcombe and Wise ended their shows? the skippy, arm wavy bit.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
whoa, no idea ... I haven't even heard of those guys. but it's a pretty natural way to end, when you're happy with what you just finished.

THIS IS GENIUS. The flute? The sick moves at 3:40? I am in awe. Excellent excellent job.

I noticed that you seemed different in this lip dub than your usual lip dubs. At first I thought it was the song, and then I realized you just weren't wearing glasses. :-P

I loved the video and the song was great. Saul Williams is my little brother's favorite spoken word artist. There's a hard-cover book of his poetry in the Princeton Univ. library that was signed by him. It would have cost my brother over a hundred dollars to keep the book and report it missing.

thats a long song man. I'm impressed.

And I agree with Steadman, the part @ 4:18 when you go off frame and then back in.... pure gold.

personally, I like african student movement better and think it would be a very cool lip dub...but because of the chorus I can see how it would be awkward

list of demands could work in NYC i think

    It was amazing.

    Great Job.

    Two things :

    1. Anna's camera work has elevated the lip -dub to a higher art form.

    2. It's beautiful, but as a brown-colored type person,It gives me pause... but still it's really quite lovely.
  • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
re #2 - because of the lyrics, and what he says about people who aren't as black as he is?

No, generally just understanding whereof he speaks:

The Madame CJ walker reference, understanding the "paper-bag" test, the stuff that exists within the black community. I'm not making a definitive judgement, "pause" is not a bad-thing Birthday Boy, Thinking... C'est Bon. Art should = dialogue
there is an appreciation/appropriation thing sometimes.
