I set up my camera in three locations, for an hour in each, and waited to see what happened.
I was surprised and excited at the results. The film brings up issues of consent and the ethics of filming in a public place; self-presentation and how people wish to be represented; how these same people perceive the filmmaker and what he/she is doing; and issues of reflexivity, and the interaction inevitable in a filmic encounter.
I was also surprised at the amount of people willing to participate in each location, and why this difference exists. What is about these people, and not others, that gave them the courage to perform? Why did so many others refuse the opportunity? And what is the value of this exchange? I, as the filmmaker, am receiving valuable footage, but what are the participants gaining?
