The word “Tkaronto” is a Mohawk Indian phrase for “where there are trees standing in the water.” It is widely believed that this term was later changed to “Toronto” by French explorers and thereby the origin of the name of the capital of Ontario.

The Toronto of today is a bustling contemporary metropolis home to a myriad of ethnic groups as well as serving as the financial hub of Canada.

These images were made in Toronto during a Magnum Photos workshop under the guidance of Bruno Barbey.
