A sample movie from the Canon 5D Mark II.

The music used in the video is called "Last Night in L.A." is from my first album. Which is now available for free download on my website.

I wrote a review of the 5D Mark II here:

Gorgeous. Any personal thoughts on the camera and using it? Also, how was the editing workflow? Cheers!

Wow, crystal clarity! Probably the slr lens attributes to that.

  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
    Wow! You guys are fast.

Thanks Ron. I'll be looking to do something a bit more complicated extremely soon.

I have lots of thoughts on the camera itself Bionicpix. I just finished the review, there's a link up top there.

Great job, Phil. Thanks for sharing.
Like Ron, I'm patiently (ok, maybe not so patiently) waiting for my 5D2 to arrive.

I'd like to hear more about your editing workflow as this could present a problem to some of us with older systems.

Also, how difficult is it to focus while shooting video?
  •
  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
    Hi Bret,

I have a fairly good system and can edit natively on it. However, if you are on an older system your best bet would be to transcode the footage to another format you can edit in real time - then swap out the edl with the higher resolution material and render it out.

It's not terribly difficult to focus with the 3 inch screen, but if you want to lock critical focus I'd advise on purchasing an external monitor like the Ikon V8000HDMI or something like that.
  • Godspetmonkey 10 months ago
Have you actually hooked up the 5D Mark II to an external monitor yet whilst recording? I checked out the Ikan V80000HDMI and it looks nice. However, before I blow yet another chunk of change trying to get away from the PMW-EX1 (Murantz Audio, RedRock Mount, etc.) I'd like to know if anyone has done this in practice.

If it will stream from the camera then I'd either hook it up to an external monitor or directly into an HDMI 1394 so that I could use Adobe OnLocation CS4.

    Please let me know!

I bought the Ikan 8000HDMI monitor a few weeks ago and have mixed feelings about its performance vs price. The monitor has some serious bugs and aspect issues though for the cost it could be considered a smart purchase. The resolution of the monitor is decent, and it can be hard to see if your subject is fully in focus while recording. Also the battery plate that you can attach to the back is cheaply made and easily broken. I plan on upgrading to a Marshall monitor when I get some more cashola.

Awesome visuals. I have lived there/near there for 10+ years now and it's great to see all those spots around the pier (and under it..very cool!).

excuse me, how do you make the anchor to the exact frame? does vimeo automatically link the min:sec combination to the frame, or do you encode it somehow? or maybe it has been added by forum admins... thanks?
  • I think Vimeo did that for me. I just typed the numbers in. :)

Beautiful scenes. The waves washing the sand at the end were magnificient.
However, I seem so notice some vignetting. Also the sky rendition in some scenes is not totally "clean" in my opinion. Comments?

  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
Thanks again guys. Glad you liked the video and the music!

To answer Vincent's question. The lenses used for this video are:
    Canon 200mm f/2.8L
    Canon 85mm f/1.2L
    Canon 50mm f/1.2L
    Canon 24mm f/1.2L
    Sigam 14mm f/2.8
  • Mark Fong 11 months ago
Fantastic inspiring filming. How did you control the aperture given that you didn't use your manual aperture Nikon lenses (w/ adapter)? The shots under the pier seemed to have a pretty wide DOF but the light didn't seem very bright.

    what a great video...
what a great lens u have..:)
  •
  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
NR, When it comes to the sky, it's likely due to the compression I used on the mpeg4 export.

The vignetting was done on purpose, on one shot I used my hand even to soften the edges.

Great work, Phil. It must look fantastic on a 1080p monitor! Two questions:
    1) what's the music?
    2) what CF card(s) did you use to capture? Some say Sandisk III good enough..

  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
    Thanks again guys.

Scott, good point. I'll be doing something more active. This was just my first test footage really.

crazed mule, 1. I just added that music info to the top there. The song is called "Last Night in L.A." from my first album DIN. I'm currently in production on my 2nd album. 2. I have used Sandisk IV 16gb and Lexar 300x 8gb cards with success. I don't have anything slower than those in my bag though. Sandisk III's are likely still good enough due to the data writing speed.

I am doing a lot of stop motion myslef, but after every longer session I need to have my cameras cleaned. Does the integrated cleaning system in 5DII really work?
  •
  • Phil Holland plus 11 months ago
    Thanks people.

    Katarzyna,

The sensor cleaning does indeed work well. I have seen a noticeable improvement on the 1Ds Mark III and the 5D Mar II with the sensor cleaning. That said, occasionally I still find a few dust bunnies. But I am pretty hard on my gear and I prefer shooting on primes. So I change my lenses a lot more than the average shooter.

Just to see how it looked on a SD timeline I downloaded your original upload file, converted it to NTSC .dv file via mpeg slipstream, placed it on the timeline and wow, it looked very good. Also mpeg slipstream playing your .mov file just blows away vimeo as far as quality playback.

    Mark,

My original upload file was also compress and optimized for web delivery. The actual footage looks even better. I have since exported a Blu-ray disc with some footage and have been impressed with the quality.

Also, just hooking up the camera to a HDTV via the HDMI looks pretty stunning as well.

    Phil,
I just plunked down for a 5D Mark II. I blame you and Laforet for getting me into this mess!

Do you think that the 5d ii can soot fireworks easy ?
  •
  • Phil Holland plus 10 months ago
Godspetmonkey - I have hooked it up to the Ikan v8000HDMI and it works well. I have issues with the Ikan battery mount though :(

I don't really know of any other HDMI monitors though to really compare it to.

2spetses - Fireworks aren't the hardest thing in the world to shoot, so yes. Also, the low light capabilities of the camera will help you out. What I would do though is bring a flashlight and a sheet of paper to help lock the exposure. Otherwise the camera in a pitch black sky will go straight to ISO 3200, which for fireworks isn't really needed.

Hi, great work. how did you change focus without shaking the camera? That seems to be the hardest aspect of the 5DII. Do you have an accessory that helps you rotate the focus?
  • Phil Holland plus 10 months ago
    Hi Eriq,

I was able to change the focus just using the ring and my hands. Steady hands and good tripod helped that. I do recommend utilizing a follow focus though if you need to do that under real production scenarios.
  • eriq nixon 10 months ago
Do you recommend any inexpensive follow focus throughs? Thanks

very nice video... especially for someone who's buried under the Montreal snow! Nice to think of what we would be seeing all over the world. Just got my Canon 5D Mark II yesterday, I'll share the beautiful, icy whiteness sooner than later :)

Oh & nice set of lenses there man!
  • Phil Holland plus 10 months ago
Snow is something I don't get to shoot too much of out here in Southern California so I'm a bit envious, but I'll be envious with my shorts on :)
