I was given the opportunity to direct, shoot and edit a series of stories for a children's vacation bible school in Peoria, IL. The stories are centered around each class theme and Bible verse but are set in the old west. In short, these are cowboy bible stories. The one here, which is the fourth in the series, is based on a familiar passage of the Bible, Matthew 7:7, "Seek and you will find."
The individual playing Pecos in this video is a member of the local SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), which is an international organization created to preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. One of the unique aspects of SASS approved Cowboy Action Shooting™ is the requirement placed on costuming. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood western star, or an appropriate character from fiction. Their costume is then developed accordingly.
This is my first attempt at doing anything you might call "directing." It is also the first time that any of the characters involved (Pecos in this video) in this project had ever acted. In the end, I'm a little proud of the whole group for the effort they put into this even though this was outside anyone's comfort zone.
The equipment I used for this video is pretty basic:
Canon 5D Mark II
Canon L-series 24-105 lens
Azden wireless mic system
No special lighting. My take is that I probably needed a little fill light on the actor's face. But, you can't do what you can't do.
Zoom H4N for final audio
Edited in FCP
Sound work in Soundtrack Pro
Some color grading (mostly luma levels) in Color

Hmm…it looks like things are taking a while to load. Try again?
