See all Show me
I first became aware of Michael Levin's photographs in 2010. His photographs of everyday places and common subjects are transformed into something much more when he views them through his lens...absolutely stunning! Being that a large majority of Michael's work is done in Japan, I instantly had a connection to it as I too have a bond with Japan and have traveled and documented the landscape extensively in my own way. After watching my film Hayaku (vimeo.com/12112529) Michael contacted me regarding a project he was working on and felt it might be of interest to me. He told me that he really appreciated my work and recognized the dedication and effort that went into it. I agreed to go on a trip with him to Japan and work on his project. But for me, there was a greater opportunity at hand. We had several conversations and I gave him some ideas about expanding the project and he really took to it. A month later and we were in Japan having beers and sushi.

I wanted to document Michael at work, in Japan, in a way that hasn't really been explored with photographers. I told Michael of my idea to make an artistic representation of his experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun - to show him in his working environment in a way that complimented his work. Not to explain it with words, but to feel it through the flow of the film. I wanted to show the process, the journey, the adventure in a way that would give the viewer an emotional connection to Michael and his photography.

The final result is something that I think is truly original… something that showcases who Michael is, and more importantly, what his work is all about. This film is a collaboration between Michael and I and our love for photography, film, Japan and adventure. This is a subject that Michael and I are continuing to explore as we plan more trips together, more films and more adventures.

I hope you enjoy!

Great work, I love the concept and would love to see a tighter 2 minute cut weaving in more of your work with the emotion. The shorter cut would keep the viewer wanting to see more while keeping the mood.
  • Brad Kremer plus 8 months ago
Thanks, but I must disagree. The film was made to fit the mood of Michael's work. A shorter cut would only tell part of the story and would cater to those with short attention spans.

Brad, you are right. This IS original in every way. Documentary meets art meets timelapse meets minds. You've truly captured the solitude, travel, expanses and dedication on both sides of the camera here. I can only imagine the effort you both went to in making this, especially with the dynamic perception gear, grips, dolly's stills. A real pleasure to watch, thank you!

Stunning work Brad. I struggle to film my brother who is also a great landscape photographer but you have put together a beautiful piece which is aptly suited to Michaels stunning imagery.

Japan looks like an amazing landscape to photograph. I'm going to share this with my brother. He is going to want to go there as soon as he sees it.

    Brilliant!!!!

Really enjoyed this one! In a way you're showing the viewer what Michael sees when he's exploring the landscape, using composition and time lapse to make a link to his photographic style. Am curious to see what more is going to come out of this collaboration.

If anyone could please tell me what kind of titling technique is used in the opening shot, or show me an informative video on how to create those kinds of titles I would be greatly appreciative!
  • Dan Hashemi 8 months ago
Hey Tyler, it can be achieved in AE with rotoscoping, then duplicating your layers and having the text in between the layers so that some of the text falls behind the mountains and the rest in front. Maybe that gives you some ideas on how to approach this :)
  • Dan Hashemi 8 months ago
You can check out this video by Chris Crutchfield where he uses the same concept and animates the typography: vimeo.com/6593996

Brad, your work is evolving wonderfully! I am truly a fan now. I never had a film inspire both my love of photography and film at the same moment. And Michael, love the use of the umbrella. Such a simple method to shoot in the rain! Very cool. I look forward to seeing both of your visions progress over the years. Cheers.

Some people are truly gifted and see the world in a special way. Brad is one of those people, I'm truly honored to count him among my online friends. When I watch your work, it feels like "home". I know that sounds odd, but it's refreshing and familiar at the same time. I wish I had your editor to put my current timelapse film together for me.

    Awesome choice of sound.

this is incredible. Great work. I was wondering what you did to get the shots while you were driving on the road. How did you connect the camera to the vehicle or did you hold it out the window? I have been thinking of making some kind of box to connect to the front of a car to get similar shots. Your insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  • Brad Kremer plus 8 months ago
Thanks... As for the car shots I used a car mount kit that I got from filmtools.

    Absolutely amazing work!

I love the minimalism in his photography but I do wonder just how much post processing goes into it...
  • Brad Kremer plus 8 months ago
    Thank you

I can't speak for Michael... but being there as he worked I can tell you that what you see in his photography is what is there in real life. There is no "manipulation".
  • Philip Han 8 months ago
I assume you used TS lenses is that correct?

No manipulation at all? I understand that he uses ND filters, small Apertures, and really low ISO's to get long exposures but the resulting pictures are quite amazing in the sense that they're flawless. The reason I'm saying this is because the picture of the road has no dust, dirt, or imperfections on it so I figure he might have photoshopped it out.
  • Brad Kremer plus 8 months ago
That's the beauty of Michael's work. He spends weeks on a shooting trip. Photographs hundreds and hundreds of images and is lucky to get a couple that he puts in his portfolio.
