Hi Volker I finally managed to see your film via the Roger Deakins forum.

I really liked it and thought it was very well constructed. The dialogues were very good, and the reporter character came out as quite amusing and funny.

I liked the way you made it all happen in one single location, and the dialogue made the story move forward in a "clean" and steady pace. If there is one thing I wished was different was the ending. I understand why it ends the way it does, but maybe you would have a much more powerful film if your ending was "bigger", like a strong punchline. Maybe something visual, something that could wrap up the entire story in one meaningful, and powerful image.

The other thing is the visual style. As you intended to make a sci fi/humor, maybe the visual style could have been more sci fi and less "documentary".

Other than that, I thought it was a very good piece of storytelling.

    Congratulations!

    Hi Nuno,

thank you very much for sharing your detailed perspective on my film!

You are absolutely right about the ending: It is in a way "small" ... but it would have been another film, if we had decided to go with the big punch in the end. The idea was, to make a small film about the premise that is in the opening titles of the film "we never no." ... Thus it's open ending and an intellectual approach which doesn't work that well with a big audience.

Bedsides due to budget - the documentary-style however was our choice to give the viewer absolutely nothing to hold on to visually - only the poor contraptions and the bearded man and his story.

Thank you again for taking time to watch the film and your words. I appreciate it very much.

Excellent film and very clearly a deserved winner of awards as the film excels in so many departments.

The acting, camera and edit are at a very high level and I found the dialogue perfectly believable.

Inevitably I found myself wishing for a CGi ending of Hollywood scale....but I liked the conclusion which leaves 'epic' to the experts.

Dear Bob, thank you very much! I appreciate your comment. We decided on the ending that underlines the tagline of the film - what we know (or in this case - can see) is droplet ... :) this is the dreamers ending.

    Hi Volker,

Finally I managed to watch your movie!
I enjoyed the relationship between both characters, there's a tenderness in the way they relate. The moment when the reporter finds the key of the spaceship and gives it to the bum is a nice one. Also, I like the aesthethic choice, the way you used digital seems like how independent filmmakers used film in movies shot in 16mm in the 70's.
I think that the dialogues could be better to be honest and the ending could have had some work. The sound (probably it was on purpose) when the reporter hears the bum through the speaker isn't clear. It gave me the idea that he's in the spaceship, probably the ideia is to leave that to the viewer interpretation but either way, is that a good dramatic mechanism? I would like to hear something meaningful, something that translated the idea of the movie "look at you judging me for being what I am and look at me now so close to the stars"!

    Either way, congratulations!

    "funk you" Volker.

I personally wouldn't vote for a big budget style ending. I was actually expecting the reporter to put on goggles at the end and a fade to black with audio saying the time for next lift-off. Enjoyed it!

    ... funk you, too, John.
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you liked it.

Getting 10-12 people together to even drink can be a challenge...so here we are, with a story...with a variety of different interpretations...the idea of one but the work of a few, a slice of unreality in 13 minutes or so that takes you to another place? Yes!

I like...the grittiness of it. The cinematography, whether intentional or not...makes the film. The association of it all...how many times have we known absolute dreamers who had to resort to other substances to somehow make those dreams less daunting? Even when it made them...worse?

"You drank...the rocket fuel!!!" Great line, and true as well...when the Russians used to deploy the MIG-25, the ground crew would often drink the ethyl alcohol used to maintain/fuel it...

And...like anyone with messed-up dreams, it didn't turn out like the personal fantasy that so many hang on to..to keep them from leaving this earth...but he did escape. He did leave this plain. On his own terms...in a rocket ship of his making...his ticket out of personal Hell.

Thanx for making me...think! 13 minutes of dreamers...I know I have some rocket fuel of my own around here somewhere...

    hi osgo,
thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on the film: I'm happy whenever it hit's a nerve - like it did to you. you are right that the grittiness and cinematography are crucial to this small piece. I am really glad you liked it. ... enjoy the fuel.

cheers and have a blast! volker
