Always accusing and always blaming, and we rest much more comfortably when the focus (and blame) is on others. We resist the self-examination that can show us our need and drive us to Christ. Instead, it is easier to point to the failures and sins of others - and keep responsibility at arms length. Always protecting ourselves means we experience broken relationships.
