    Great stuff guys.

Whats the Camera u guys used? 5DmkII? and what s the picture profile? entire shoot . .
  • MARZ plus 7 months ago
    red, no lens, b&w
  • jeff venable plus 7 months ago
    amila,
we used a 5DmkII. Could be wrong...but I'm almost positive it was a neutral profile with the contrast brought down a level or two.
BTS was either the same 5D or a 7D. A few shots had a polarizer. And the 24-70 L-series lens was pretty much a go-to for a lot of it.

    glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for sharing this with us. You all kick ass.
I'M AMAZED... How many lead actors can you name who could compose a musical soundtrack this good?
    Apart from Clint maybe.

"We'll show you how a great team, using the right set of tools - including the new Magic Bullet Suite 11 - made it all happen on a very limited budget."

That and about 20 grand worth of gear. Just sayin'.
  • Red Giant sponsor 7 months ago
As a matter of fact, we did not provide Seth with any additional Gear. He was loaned about 2K in gear from 2 companies. But what indie director doesn't get favors or borrow gear from friends for their shoots? The entire cash budget for this film was $9K, and seth had to find creative ways to make that work. We will post a blog entry about it shortly.
  • Clint Weldon 7 months ago
It would be really cool if you could list out the gear used and the price for each item. I checked a few of the items you mentioned and it looked like about 7k worth of gear plus another $3200 for the 5D with stock lens and then $800 for the software. I love videos like this but no one ever gets into the actual budget breakdown, that's the part that comes in really handy. Yes, people borrow gear but not everyone has a friend who owns a 2k Arri, an Orbit dolly or a $2000 rail system.

Very true Clint. Great vid nonetheless...

Somehow i feel the need to drop my thoughts on this no-budget money thing...

To make one thing clear in the first place: No-Budget = No-Movie.
I guess that makes sense in some kind of way. If you can't buy or even just rent a cam....well you're missing out the most needed piece of equipment at all.
But in the last two years it has become famous -in a way- to be a little angry at people who claim they did a no-budget movie. Even worse if it doesn't look like a piece of crap.

What I really can understand is the fact of maybe being envy somehow. I myself was often envy about people being lucky enough to know someone who knows someone who has great gear to play with...but in the end that is how the world is turning. Knowing someone can make a huge difference. And you get to know people with nice gear mostly by just working for them or sth like that.

To shorten things up: why is this no-budget thing so important??? Our action short "Burning Man" - vimeo.com/12925116 - does suck in terms of audio and some others too (well...of course audio ;) ) and it almost has no story-to-tell. But it was fun and we learned the hell out of what sucks in it. And we were able to use gear that would have made us all pay for the rest of our lives....simply because we got supported by a lot of friends. And yes, we call that no-budget. Because we did not pay for all that stuff. Apart from the hotel we had to sleep in and many cheeseburgers... And we recieved a lot of angry lines for titling it "no-budget".

Sorry for all that many lines here. But what I really learned from that experience is really just one thing:
    STORY IS ALL THAT COUNTS.

Got no billion bucks? Don't try to make Transformers 4.
Got a story to tell. Make it a story you CAN TELL. And I really believe people will like it.

Make the story the important thing to talk about and not what you had to pay for making it.

Ok, again, sorry for that much blah ;)
    Happy filmmaking everyone!!! :)
  • Cezar Siqueira 7 months ago
You are absolutely correct, my friend. You've just said it all. If you get 1 bilion with the help of your friends, you shouldn't be ashamed. Actualy, you should be proud and thankfull. Nice words, man.

This BTS video is all kinds of awesome. It's a semester's worth of classes at a digital film school. If you're even half-way resourceful, you could use this video as a Rosetta Stone for no budget epic filmmaking.

I feel like the indie film joke was a cheap shot. And it wasn't funny, and I loved the movie Garden State. Biased director is biased.

It's a very clever commercial this, if nothing more. I have Stu's DV Filmmaker's handbook, and it's quite good and useful actually in it's own way.

Guy's, really great effort on this, you really took the time to make this promo, not from the sw developers point of view, but the consumers. Yes it's a fancy promo, but the gear behind it is 100% obtainable by us who have bought MBL. You didnt use a fancy Red, Alexa or expensive Zeiss cp2s. I think that is a bold and understanding move from you guys, well thought out. Can you please confirm as above what other than a 24-70 L-series lens was used? Thanks again, 100% inspiring!
  • jeff venable plus 7 months ago
    Kacey--

    Other than the 24-70, we have an 85mm 1.2, a 100mm macro, and a 50mm 1.4.

    Glad you enjoyed the BTS!

Well there were two monitors used, both from the company Small HD. The larger one is the DP1x and the smaller one is the DP6.

First, huge kudos to an 18 year old lead actor and orchestral score composer. Damn! Second, equally huge kudos to the directors of Plot Device and the BTS -- both are really solid, compelling films. A great pair! It's inspiring to see so much love and effort come together and create the awesome. Rock on!
