Another Today In Our Backyard episode.

Hope you enjoy Part 2 of the Mantis series. If there is something viewers might want to check out in our yard or some kind of request to "film more of this" let me know.

That guy seems like a total jerk, eating all those aphids and whatnot.
  • Ian Lucero plus 2 years ago
    He's just hungry.

They really are amazing creatures. Quite alien looking. There seems to be a lot of 'food' for them in your garden. You might end up getting over run by pray mantids. What eats a pray mantis? Hedgehogs? Maybe you should get ready to bring some of them in!

how do you growm them? that's so cool!
  • Ian Lucero plus 2 years ago
You can buy eggs from your local nursery the same way you buy lady bugs for the same purpose. But then you have to grow them and make sure they don't eat each other. They tend to do that. So maybe having many jars.

Really cool experiment and documentation. You really do have a lot of aphids to be eaten! Good Luck!

Nice work, lucerito! I'm hungry for some aphids now, but my roommates done eat them all...

I like the combo of stills and video, and the dramatic music choice is the right touch...

Holy Shit Dude. THats a frickin beautiful video. I just joined the vimeo gang. I am going nutty with my cel phone. How are ya? Are the aphids thining out at all?
  • Ian Lucero plus 2 years ago
    hey!!! joshua!!! thanks.

    EVERy ONE WELCOME JOSHUA KOHL!

the aphids are still plenty. the praying mantis thing is a little hard to make happen really well. lady bugs are a little easier. i don't know what to do for a follow up video to this one because we can't find the praying mantids.

i'll be starting a series called "30 Second Macro"

I wanna see some cel phon videos!

You don't see the baby mantids because I ate them. They are actually still stuck in my vaggie lip folds. They have a cannabalistic flavor and a crunchy texture that is undeniably delicious.

yay macro! if i was an aphid i'd run when i saw zorak. super rad. i think i'll stick with ladybugs.
  • Ian Lucero plus 2 years ago
hahaha! Yeah ladybugs seem to be less fussy. Easier to manage. We just release a few thousand into the willow tree because the aphids were just ridiculous.

    Chow down lady bugs!!

  • This reminds me of homeworld, the computer game. Die, aphids. Your end has come.

ok so catching up here - two months later - how is the matis - do you bring him in at night? what happens in the winter?
  • Ian Lucero plus 2 years ago
hahah! 2 Months! oh my god!

well right after i decided to get serious about updating the series more often, I got really busy with work on the house and work work.

BUT! while working on the house we did run into ONE of the mantids. It was chillin' out with a spider. We took some photos and video and possibly we'll post it. thanks for asking.
