Thanks Pierre. Unfortunately there is no behind the scenes video for this. It would be good because this project has been an ongoing saga. There is an all CG version that I'm not involved with at daveschool.com. Check it out it's pretty good.
Some of the CG integration isn't quite seamless, between character motion (maybe modelling movement from motion track data would be good?) and some color grading (some of the aliens' colors were a bit too "Halo"), but it's very minor and the overall piece is excellent.
I saw pieces of BSG, stargate, star wars, and other material being reference here. Nice work intermingling universe styles!
Great story, great acting and directing, great post, really just great! Has anyone picked it up?
Thanks Brian. I was the editor on this. The CG, effects, compositing and color was done by students at the DAVE School. They did all the hard work. They actually have done another all CG version. Check it out at daveschool.com
The production quality and effects are way better than I expected – i'm impressed . The editing was really well done. Have you done a lot of action editing before?
Only issue was with the acting. Didn't quite do it for me. You are already at a disadvantage with a sci-fi short in terms of believability, so you really need good actors to carry the viewer all the way though. Luckily you don't need *too* much acting with action... wielding a massive gun is the most important part.
Thanks Blake. I edit a bit of everything and have done a few action pieces. I cut a bit of everything. Not a lot of experience with comedy, but I just started editing a feature that has quite a bit of humor and some action too.
I agree. The acting is so important. It's a huge piece of the production puzzle. All of the actors in this short were the students that were working on the CG and effects, so there were no trained performers involved. Considering that, I think they were great. But pros would have taken the whole thing up a level.
I've seen stuff broadcast on TV that wasn't as good as this, so, while you say the touch of pros would bring it up a notch or three, it's definitely quite good as it is!
As for the acting, I was actually surprised how well they were able to stay in character and deliver their lines like they believed them, even if they were somewhat two dimensional characters. I've worked with much worse!!
WOW!!! Stunning stuff!! I agree that the acting ain't up to scratch, but it ain't the worst I've seen either...
VFX - top notch; editing - top notch; costumes - you get the idea! My fave part was in the "Next time" segment when the troop comes in to land - NICE!!!
Lots of nods to Starship Troopers too... :-)
LOTS of nice touches here! I know you only did the editing, but if there is any way that they might do a "making of", I would be hugely interested in that...and judging by the comments above, I'm not in a minority here! ;-)

Is there 'a making of'?
