Wild Boy (Final Version)
A short film I made regarding a kid with vivid imagination. I did this for a Film class project. Did not turn out quite how I planned. I spent good two months writing a script, drawing out complicated sequences and testing the camera for hours. My original idea was to adapt "Where the Wild Things are" and shoot it with Terrence Malick influenced style.
But by the time we started shooting the film, we had so many problems and did not even have enough time to shoot 1/3 of the script. I also realized I can't quite handle directing and shooting at same time, which explains some of the bad camera work. It also does not help that the basic plot does not come across well...

Your team did a fine job. It does have the "Wild Thing" feel; you've captured that well.
Scott
I don't think you're a terrible cameraman. Give yourself some more credit!
Not too bad ! You have a good idea, and the progression of the film is quite logic. There ae no long part, and the public should stay captivated until the end. That's good scenarist job ! The scene transition is all pretty well done. Good assembly job in general.
Well, now the "negative" part:
- The shoot is not so stable sometimes, there it should be. Use a steadycam for the movment scene. Those scene are giving a starnge bad impression during watching.
- The in-house shoot are too yellow. How could it be possible with the HV20 ? I've goods this camera, and with correct setting, the collor are natural. You should relly check your setting (the while balance especially).
These 2 points deserve your film, that will be remarquable if those errors were not there.
Notice also that the 1:20 introdction is too long. This is OK for a 2 hours film, but not for a 12minutes one !
-I originally built one of those "$14 Stedycam" but after using it for few takes I really did not find it to be very useful and it was cumbersome to work with it. Hopefully with more practice I can get better with it!
-The indoors scenes are intentionally "yellow"; I did some color correction on it. I originally just made minor adjustments, but the footage looked so bland because of plain white walls, kid's white shirt and so forth. I will keep messing with the settings until I get it to look more subtle.
-Intro length is a compliant I have gotten from a lot of people. I plan to severely cut it down or maybe even remove it. I was just so attached to it because I spend a good chunk of time on making it!
Thanks for all the encouragement!
This is good to have an introduction, as well as a conclusion, but it should be in relation with the film duration. If you show your production to a friend that never looked it before, he should have the same impression as me. I know that aftre 10 or 100 seeing it, we do not see anymore the default !
I had the same problem with some scene that I absolutly wanted to be in my film. But at the end, I suppressed it and put it in the "cutted scene". It's a way to "cut the apple in two": It is in, and not in at the same time... And at the end, I really have to admit that the removal was a good thing ! But this is very hard to admit for me...
