Scrapper Duncan's soil was heavy with chalk and flint. Over 12 days, he swung mattock and dug spade into a bed, to break up the compacted dirt, then sieved it to get all the stones out. The resulting bed (23 foot long, 4 foot wide and about 18 inches deep) lies at the same level as before, with aerated soil instead. The stones will become the floor of a wood shed.
