I wish I had more shots like this... but sadly the crane was snapped in half during the trip :P but that's another story for another time :)

Today it's my birthday and I got a camera! (Canon HF 100)
So I will be really filming! Lots to learn of course.
The films on vimeo will help me. How did you exactly make this shot, where you move upwards so smooth?

Somehow I don't think this is for peole who travel lightweight bicycle traveler.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey Blanche :) Happy Birthday!!! That is an awesome birthday present ;) Can't wait to see what footage you capture with it, especially on your upcoming bike trips!

This clip was pretty smooth to start... but it had some side to side rocking from the winds - so SmoothCam (filter) in Final Cut Pro took that out :)

And no, ha ha, I don't think strapping a crane to your bike would be good for the knees...
  • Miles Pember 11 months ago
yeah, post-production motion stabalization can work stuff like this out. i personally use shake's smoothcam, which is pretty much the same thing. it doesn't work all the time though.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey Miles :) Yea, I've pulled a picky clip into Motion a few times... I actually a few clips that are having issues that I wanted to try again in Shake... but I need to get my hands on it first.

Mike it seems to go on forever. I saw your custom crane in one of your behind the scenes. Wow now that is innovation!
Thanks for showing us how beautiful this country truly is.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey DaVinci :) Yes it does. Ha :P although about the innovation part, we just stuck a box up there and crossed our fingers it never fell off. Thanks!

  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks Daniel :) This ratio is 2.35:1...

    kessler krane?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
No... this crane is actually a ProAm crane :)

Nice, as always, but all of these long shots and looking out into the never-ending distance are getting just a little tiresome on me. What about a silhouette, or a close-up, or something with dialogue, a few cuts or perhaps a shot not including a bicycle?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Hey Zach :) Thanks - but yea, it's funny you say that, Amanda just got on me yesterday about that. I'm gonna pick out some different shots... as much as I can sit and stare at riding footage all day long... I'm sure it gets pretty old pretty quick :P

Next one is gonna have no bike :) maybe some dialogue (if I can quickly enough find a quotable 20 second clip)... but I'm leaning towards close-ups.

did you ever get a shot of the reverse? Him coming towards you as the crane descends?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
I did get shots similar to that :P it turns out though the facing-Larry crane shots are usually moving shots. But he does pass by the camera... I'm sad cause there really was a lot more shots I had drawn out and... yea... when it snapped in half, it kinda' killed that party.

Reminds me of my bike tours. I loved it.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks Hall :) Do you have any footage from your trips? Where did you travel?
  • Hall 11 months ago
I only took photographs throughout the trip. I've done two tours, one of the Blue Ridge Parkway and then one from Kentucky to Wyoming.

I'm jealous that you get to work on this project for so long. Years later I still think of the days of spinning and freedom. It's amazing how far from my life that seems now.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
That's very cool :) next time you go for a long-distance ride make sure to pack a camera. You can add your videos to our vimeo.com/groups/stockpile group...

But I know what you mean about how the trips stay with you...

  • David Schulte plus 11 months ago
Beautiful. More accurately - you used a jib, not a crane, correct?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks David :) Uhmm... I think so, yea... I think it's a "jib" proper :P

  • Dylan Baldridge plus 11 months ago
Gorgeous.. The crane shot is beautifully timed to catch him as he goes over the hill.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks very much Dylan :) I tried... my little black & white monitor I was looking at sucked in the sunlight...

great clip, the movement is nice and subtle. haha makes me want a crane hahaha.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 10 months ago
Hey Matthew :) Thanks so much - cranes can be a lot of fun to play with! And some are pretty cheap too.
  •
  • Matthew Maranan 10 months ago
Oh really? if you don't mind me asking...how much did you get your crane for? and sorry to hear that it snapped. :[
