3rd class is the only way to go if u want to be in amongst it. A couple of days ago, I travelled third class on the train from Astana to Semey in North-eastern Kazakstan. The sleeper bed/seat I had was along the corridor and in full view of the rest of the passangers in the wagon. My earplugs and eyepatches were useful.
I made this little picture postcard to pass the hours,,, all 17 of them. Everyone on the train was curious of the laptop’s editing process and happy when they saw the finished film. Not being able to speak the language is the biggest barrier but the “Samarkand silk carpets” postcard went down a treat!
Today, I write from Russian siberia (city of Barnaul) having crossed my final Central Asian border yesterday. This afternoon, I’ll be on route east through the Russian Altai mountains. In about a week, I’ll be passing through the remote Russia/Western Mongolia border to the town of Olgii…and i tell you what, I too am really excited to be getting back there!
