So you say you have some clout?
These days clout has a different meaning -- that's Klout with a "k."
If you have a Facebook or Twitter page you have a Klout score. It is the measurement of your online influence, which could benefit you and your career.
There's no question social media is here to stay.
It can be your best friend or in some cases your worst enemy.
"Social media by all means is absolutely mainstream and there's I think all businesses need to realize that they need to embrace that along with their traditional media. Using the two together is very, very powerful," said social media expert Rob Bertholf.
Everyone who has a Twitter or Facebook page or is tapped into the professional network LinkedIn has a Klout score.
Klout is a San Francisco-based company that created an algorithm that allows you to identify what your social influence and true reach is on the web. Scores range from 1 to 100.
"Here in Hawaii the largest Klout score is a 71," Bertholf said.
Rob Bertholf is a local social media expert who sent the first "tweet" from Hawaii back in 2006.
He's developed a Hawaii Klout website highlighting the state's top influencers.
"It's a ranking board of all the influencers all the brands and all the media and celebrities -- like yourself -- so we're able to see like who has the most clout," Bertholf said.
The list also includes politicians who understand the importance Klout could have on campaigns.
"I think this is going to play a role. You can look at it like a credit score -- and really at the end of the day -- I think klout will essentially be an online credit score -- or online influence metric," Bertholf said.
Our Justin Cruz, Olena Heu and Andrew Pereira are also high on the list. Justin has a score of 55.
"One of the highest in the celebrity news media category," Bertholf said. "You're actually right about the 95 percentile in Hawaii you're up there dude."
Your score is based on your true reach or the size of your engaged audience. As your online influence rises so does your Klout score.
"Here's an example. Nocturnal Lounge just opened up and they actually used people, influencers to come in before the thing opens to come in and talk about it," Bertholf said. "I definitely think that more and more businesses will be using this data and harnessing those and embracing those influencers."
Not everyone is convinced. Some say Klout puts too much emphasis on replies and re-tweets rather than engagement or offline work.
Still there's something called Klout Perks. Hotels in Las Vegas reward people with high Klout scores with upgrades.
