    Wow!
This could be the offcial video for that song.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Thanks, Leo. The official video (made back in 1979) is a great example of early music-video. Cheap sets, bad lip-synching, and primitive, cheesy special effects. Just like mine! ;-)
  • Beauty Is Animate 3 years ago
No way! It's BETTER than the original music video.

Where did you find those masks? They're brilliant!
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
In Chartres, of all places! On my honeymoon this summer. I thought they were somehow wonderfully French, but my husband informed me that they can be found in England, too. Ah well. I'm still charmed by them.

I bought them thinking that I'd either send them to my little niece or use them in a lip-synching video. Poor niece! I tell myself that she's too young for them anyway. Maybe one day when she's older I'll part with them. :-)

    Thanks for your nice comment!

Now this is how you official start on Vimeo! This was brilliant. It was so mesmerizing that I couldn't look away. I was not a fan of the moving shots but there was so many other great elements! I can't wait to see what's next.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Thanks so much, Jared F! That means a lot.

Don't expect too much too soon. I'm not sure I'll have time to get so ambitious for awhile. I've got a couple of other lip dubs ready, but they are much simpler affairs.

As for the moving shots, well, that's ok. I was trying for a kind of 'pac-man' or 'pong' vibe... sort of primitive video style. Feeble but fun. Anyway, thanks for your honesty. :-)
  •
  • Did you finger-spell a word there at the end? I couldn't quite make it out. 1.22?
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
He he! I never thought of that!

No, I was signaling to the camera... a kind of lo-fi clapboard I use to signal the next take. I think some of those signals were for take "2.1" or some other strange fraction of a take. I liked them so I left them in. :-)

Good job, you might want to throw a deinterlacer in there though, but good job none the less.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Hmmm. I may try that. I'm not sure why the motion became blurry when I uploaded to Vimeo. It's something I'd like to correct. I'm new to this, so I'm glad to get suggestions and advice. Thank you!

Thanks for such a nice comment.

    Pretty cool.

My only criticism is that you can see the a sliver of the bg layer when you move squares around. The moves weren't quite exact. Maybe you should have composited the black grid layer over the squares.

    Just my two cents!!!!
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
    Hello, and thanks.

I'm new at this and appreciate the advice. I agree that the movement is blurred, which is a problem (you're not the first to mention it). I have a feeling that if I'd converted to HD I wouldn't be having this issue... it looks fine on my computer and others I've used, even in a compressed format and even on Youtube! (at least in HQ). Something obviously went wrong when I uploaded to Vimeo.

It's funny, your advice presupposes that I know a lot more than I do! I'm not sure what you mean by the black grid layer, etc (sorry!).

As for the "moves" not being exact, did you mean that they don't fit the music? Or...?

Thanks again for your suggestions! I have a lot to learn, but I'm enjoying the process.

  •
  • malcolm man plus 3 years ago
Oh, by the grid layer, I meant the black lines that separate the individual squares.

By exact, I mean that you can see a little but of the BG image it's passing over on the top and bottom.

I didn't think the compression was bas actually.

    Looks pretty good.

Om regards to HD, it's just a size, (1080x1920, 720x1280, 720x480). When it comes to good compression, it's just a tricky combination of frame size, bit rate, key frames, etc..
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Ahhh! I see now! I read "silver" instead of "sliver" above. After that I just went blank, thinking I was lost (silly, silly fear of being mystified by technology!). Ok, this makes sense. And thanks for pointing it out. Very helpful!

Terrific! This is one of my all-time favorite ridiculous songs, and you captured it visually. I was smiling the whole way through.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Mine, too. I put it in the category of Sublime Ridiculosity. Loved it the first time I heard it, way back in 1979. Cool as candy.

Glad it made you smile. :-)

you're right! this is fun and easy... ha. sweet vid. i liked your perfect jawbone.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
    ha! I blush.

Of course, it's the magic of masks! I suppose they enhance the look of the exposed bits.
  •
  • Chris B 3 years ago
Wow quite amazing, definitely could have been the official music video for the song. How many times did you end up lip syncing that song, once for each mask? How many masks?
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
I think there were twelve masks in all. In each mask I taped myself synching first to the lead vocal and then to the back-up. Inevitably, I took two or three takes of myself doing both "roles" in every mask, for a total of anywhere from 48 to 72 takes in all.

I kept the sound down very low out of respect for my poor neighbors. They must think I'm bonkers.
  •
  • Terre Britton 3 years ago
Wonderfully bizarre. I think I counted 13 different masks... very persistent of you. I loved the yawns; and the little smiles left in at the end had that 'out-take' feeling -- like we got a chance to see the real 'you'. Very successful in many ways.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
The real me? But isn't the masked persona just as "real" as the unmasked? Or am I being too philosophical?

Pop pop pop muzik! (ah, that's better!)

WOW!! Pretty kewl. I just complete project like this my self that took 6 months to make. I made 180 sketches of a persons head wearing a mask and unique head ware on yellow note paper. I filled up all the space on the 3 wall of my cube. I haven't scanned them yet will soon and share. Great job man. I had no idea. You beat me to the punch.
  • fredasterical 3 years ago
Is this a case of "great minds"?

Actually, yours sounds nothing like mine. I didn't beat you to anything... the punch is yours for the taking!

I'll look forward to seeing your vid. Sounds interesting.

Thanks. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the response so far. I mean, I was happy with how it came out, even entertained (if I can say that about my own work... well, I just did!), but I didn't think it would get as positive a reception as this.

I guess I'm not the only person out there who enjoys complete, silly frivolity. That's nice to know. :)

I second that! We want an I heart Vimeo button!

Loved the video too, so funny and creative. Especially the non-singing faces were great, they look so bored at times. :D
I love the roughness that is left in (such as the ending, with the looking to the side and the fingers).
