Every October for the past three decades, Loris, a small town about 25 miles west of Myrtle Beach, has hosted its annual Chicken Bog-off festival.

What is chicken bog? Chicken bog is also sometimes referred to as pirlou, with as many spellings as there are ways to cook the dish!

Most recipes include the basics: rice, chicken and sausage or bacon. The soggy casserole-like concoction is a throwback meal to the days when Carolina Gold rice plantation farmland stretched across South Carolina.
