My creative focus is VHS tape, an obsolete video format that for me evokes nostalgia. The non-linear narrative of my work references many films and music videos that have inspired and captivated me while I was growing up. The characters are drawn on the videotapes using permanent markers. They are based on my favorite musicians; Alice Glass from Crystal Castles, Ian Curtis from Joy Division, Damon Albarn from Blur, Julian Casablancas from The Strokes, Victoria Legrand from Beach House, and members of the band Warpaint. Each character’s background color alludes to a specific music genre and style. The videotapes are also a reflection of my affinity for watching films, attending musical performances, and playing music. I am highly influenced by Elizabeth Peyton’s portraits of musicians and Michel Gondry’s films and music videos that combine stop-motion animation and surrealism. I’ve also been inspired by films from Darren Aronofsky, Jim Jarmusch, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Pedro Almodóvar, and Gus Van Sant.
