Ben Millet vimeo.com/2458031 inspired me to make a recipe video. You should make one too!

Shepherd's Pie - (Makes 2 nine inch pie pans)

2 pounds of lean ground beef
1 cup of chopped onions
2 12 ounce jars of beef gravy
2 teaspoons of worcestershire sauce
2 cups of cooked peas
4 cups of mashed potatoes
2 tablespoons of butter
1 cup of sour cream
1 cup of cheddar cheese (more if you like a lot of cheese like me!)
2 9"pie pans

Heat oven to 350 degrees

Cook ground beef and onion in medium skillet over medium-high heat until the meat is browned and onion is tender, about five minutes. Drain beef mixture and return to the skillet.

Add beef gravy, worcestershire and peas to the skillet and simmer on medium-low heat for two minutes.

Meanwhile, combine prepared mashed potatoes with butter and sour cream.

Pour meat mixture into 2 9" pie pans (I used two 8" square pans in this video). Spread mashed potatoes over the meat mixture and top with the grated cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes until heated through.

NOTE
This recipe is way better if you use pie crusts! I didn't have any at the time of making this video. :-(

Much more enjoyable than my video. I loved the sizzling onions. Must go make now... I need some torrents of flavor cascading against my taste buds. Great video!

no way jose! your vid rawked hard core :-D if you make this, get pie crusts. you really can't go wrong with an extra layer of fat and carbs right?

    mark is so great :)

Maybe I'll do this after Christmas. Do you think this would freeze well? If you assemble it all, but freeze it instead of baking it? That seems like a good way to keep the second pie from going bad in the fridge while you work on the first one (though it seems one would not need to worry about the first one lasting long in the fridge).
  • loonachic plus 1 year ago
it would probably freeze better after it's cooked i think. i never tried it. i only have one pan left. mark ate a whole pan tonight! the second one won't last long either. i'm thinking one more day and poof! gone.

In Britain this would be called Cottage Pie, as Shepherd's Pie is traditionally made here with minced lamb. My understanding is that in America the terms "Cottage Pie" and "Shepherd's Pie" are used interchangeably.
  • loonachic plus 1 year ago
makes sense, although i'm not sure i would like lamb in my shepherd's pie except in a gyro. gyro's are good!

Delicious. Though I find adding a dash of chili powder works well in the winter months.
  • loonachic plus 1 year ago
ooh! i'll try that next time for sure. thanks!

Yum, cottage pies and shepherd's pies are some of our favourite dishes in our house. Yummy. I wouldn't have thought to use sour cream in the mash potato! I might have to try that - normally we just add a dash of milk or normal cream. I always forget how orange American cheddar is haha. We don't use pie crusts either, but that sounds good too - can't go wrong with pastry! I like adding different vegetable to the meat as well (good for bulking it out if you want to make a bigger pie) like carrots, courgettes (zucchinis) and mushrooms and sometimes even peppers and pumpkin or squash!

Grrrrrreat video. I'm really hungry now haha!

I love Shepherd's Pie. Not sure about pastry crust but will def. try sour cream in the potatoes. As Dawkeye suggested, I usually throw some carrots in to the mix, good for colour as well as texture.

It's 8am and my stomach wants dinner.
  • loonachic plus 1 year ago
    def try a pie crust!
