3. Manfrotto Monopod Demo Footage
For most, this movie will probably be quite dull. For those those considering purchasing a monopod, I hope you will find it useful (please let me know either way).

I took a range of pans using my HV30 with and without the Manfrotto 560B monopod to help demonstrate the stabilising effect of using a monopod over handheld.

I am by no means a handheld expert (just look at my woeful pans), nor am I a monopod expert. This is me at the park, a day after I got the monopod trying my best to compare the two styles of shooting. I think you will immediately see the marked improvement using a monopod has on image stability. After only using it for a few days, my off the cuff shooting quality has improved in leaps and bounds.

Each shot is preceded with a label saying whether it was handheld or monopod assisted. The last long shot of the water bird is all thanks to the smooth movement possible with the 560B - I couldn't bring myself to cut it.

At the time I shot this my DOF adapter was broken, so unfortunately I don't have any footage of the monopod and adapter. My next videos will all be using (for the most part) the DOF adapter and monopod.

    Thanks for the comparision.

Great images too! That pink sky reflecting off the lake is amazing!

Thanks Ashley, the colour gets even better when you slap on the twoneil adapter.

Thanks for posting this. I've been considering getting the 560B. Looks very smooth.

No worries. I looked for ages for some comparison footage of the 560B and couldn't find anything very definitive. So I thought I'd help everyone out a bit with their purchasing decision.

Hey Mark, I noticed that some of the pans in the video are a bit stuttery (like around 1:12 / 1:26)... obviously this isn't your technique with the monopod... just wondering if it was an encoding thing, or maybe even the stabiliser function was switched on when you were shooting?

The HV30 produces some nice colours straight out of camera though, doesn't it!

    Hi Michael,

I did have the stabiliser on the whole time. Is that a bad thing?

Well, i'd suggest trying turning it off and see what it looks like, particularly if you are using a tripod or monopod... basically the OIS is more for stabilising handheld shots focused on the one area, but once you try to do a smooth pan, it keeps trying to reset its bearings and make the shot still again... not what you want when you're after smooth.

turning it off, you might notice it to be a little bit more shaky in general, but you wont get that stutter when panning... then you just need to work on your technique with the monopod =]

also, not having used one before, i'm not sure how OIS comes into play when using the twoneil or other adapters... others might suggest that you have it turned on to counteract vibrations..

Thanks for the heads up Michael, have since deactivated it. Will know the results when I get back from holiday.

Thanks for posting this video! I too was leaning towards a tripod, and never gave a monopod much thought. Now I think that I will get a Manfrotto 561B. Keep up the good work, its inpsiring :)

what's nice in particular using a monopod compared to handheld to my mind is how the frame of the image stays the same nicely.. of course pans are not as smooth as with a good tripod, but at least the camera won't tilt to the front or back. i consider getting one for video shooting, too...
